Old Man

Location: Edinburgh - Area of Muirhouse Gardens
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century?
Further Comments: A local paper reported that this area was haunted by an evil looking old man, with wild looking eyes and long matted hair.


Location: Edinburgh - 5 Hazeldean Terrace
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1957
Further Comments: The ghost of a Prestonpans soldier was said to haunt this site, and performed various poltergeist tricks to obtain attention from the media.


Location: Edinburgh - Former council offices, St. Giles Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The offices were once thought haunted by a man who hanged himself on the site.

Burning Light

Location: Edinburgh - Baberton House (aka Kilbaberton house)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: One former occupant of the house reported that the Green Room was haunted, as lights would always be lit by something unseen. Another occupant, aged four at the time, had to be moved from their bedroom after they complained about the girl at the bottom of the bed.

Breaking Glass

Location: Edinburgh - Cramond Inn, Cramond Glebe Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Like so many other public houses, The Cramond suffers from a polt which is blamed when glasses break for no reason and small items moved around.


Location: Edinburgh - Lochend Loch, Restalrig
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Sixteenth century
Further Comments: As Bessie Dunlop tied her horse to the edge of the loch, she heard the sound of dozens of people on horseback dash past her into the water, although nothing could be seen.


Location: Edinburgh - Hopetoun House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A number of phantoms are said to have made their home at Hopetoun, including a former coachman seen in the restaurant (the former stables) and another figure spotted in the staff toilet.

Elizabeth Dundas

Location: Edinburgh - Melville Castle Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: While the site was being renovated, one witness spotted this phantom walk through a wall.


Location: Edinburgh - York Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late
Further Comments: While working in one of the offices here, a witness could hear a young child humming a tune in the basement. The witness investigated but could find no one there.

Lurking Man

Location: Edinburgh - Private residence along Glenlee Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: A member of the family living in this house reported seeing a man lurking in the kitchen doorway on a number of occasions. On the day the family moved out, they were told that a former owner hanged himself from a wooden beam the cellar, directly under the kitchen door.

Further Comments: Rosie is said to have been a prostitute who walked in the vaults beneath this pub, and is now said to scratch and mark male members of staff. Another phantom, 'Six Finger Bill', sits under tables and grabs customer's ankles.

Date / Time: 16 July 2012, around 16:00h
Further Comments: Someone drinking at the pub felt a firm nudge on their left leg, as if a dog had pushed against them, although no canine was present.


Location: Edinburgh - Property along Waterloo Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1997
Further Comments: A workman in an empty building heard footsteps running on the floor above. He investigated and found no one. Returning to work, he heard the footsteps again a short time later. Other workers reported disappearing keys and knocking on a toilet door.


Location: Edinburgh - Building along Waterloo Place

Date / Time: Circa 1997
Further Comments: A heating engineer reported a number of incidents while working on this site, including hearing footsteps after everyone else had left, keys removed from their hooks, cold spots and objects which would disappear and reappear.

Heavy Footsteps

Location: Edinburgh - Tollcross Fire Station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2013
Further Comments: Control room staff have reported hearing heavy footsteps on the balcony surrounding the rest area and also within the corridors of the control room area. The footsteps sound as if they are walking over a stone type floor even though the balcony is metal and the corridors are all vinyl or carpeted flooring.

Old Fireman

Location: Edinburgh - Lauriston Place ( old fire station)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: Normally appearing at night, staff have reported seeing a ghostly dark figure wearing old style fire uniform. Footsteps have been heard in various parts of the building when it is known there is no-one else on duty.

Most Haunted House in Edinburgh?

Location: Edinburgh - Quaker Meeting House, Victoria Terrace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Around 1780
Further Comments: Formally owned by Major Thomas Weir who confessed to witchcraft prior to being executed, this house was considered extremely haunted (one occupier fled after only one night, having encountered a phantom calf) and was thought to have been demolished. However in 2014 it was discovered that it had been modified and incorporated into a new building.


Location: Edinburgh - Private flat, Bruntsfield area

Further Comments: Disembodied footsteps were heard by members of the family at night and in the early hours of the morning.


Location: Edinburgh - Royal Botanic Garden
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: Robert Ogilvie Crombie claimed to have encountered a number of mystical creatures here, including a centaur, a faun (called Kurmos) and Pan.


Location: Edinburgh - RAF Turnhouse (no longer operational)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1982 - 1997
Further Comments: A worker at the MOD transport section would say 'hello' to Fred, the resident ghost. It was said that if Fred was not acknowledged, the phantom would open lockers and move things around. It was thought that Fred was a worker at the site during the Second World War; he died after walking into a propeller.

Lady in White

Location: Edinburgh - Lymphoy House, Currie
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This property was said to be haunted by a woman in white, a soldier's wife who died on the steps of his parents' house after they refused to let her in. A ghostly bagpiper is also said hang around the site, after entering a tunnel beneath the house and never returning.

Hobgoblin Builders

Location: Gifford - Yester Castle
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present, although only subterranean 'Goblin Hall remains'
Further Comments: Warlock Sir Hugo de Giffard is said to have made a pact with the Devil, and in return had an army of Hobgoblins build this castle for him.

The Farmer's Wife

Location: Gladhouse Reservoir - Area before it was flooded
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It was said that the area was haunted by a couple murdered by an enraged farmer - his wife, and the young servant that she was caught sleeping with.

Tall Gentleman

Location: Haddington - Garleton House (no longer standing, though foundations may remain)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late eighteenth century
Further Comments: This ghostly figure was said to be desperate to find a volunteer who will listen to his story - no one has ever been found.

The Duke of Lauderdale

Location: Haddington - St Mary's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This former duke is seen in the church, and has been blamed for disturbing his own coffin in the crypt.
