Bearded Man

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This hairy man with mad-looking eyes was once a doctor on the site, killed by another medical practitioner over the love of a girl.


 
Burning Light

Location: Edinburgh - Baberton House (aka Kilbaberton house)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: One former occupant of the house reported that the Green Room was haunted, as lights would always be lit by something unseen. Another occupant, aged four at the time, had to be moved from their bedroom after they complained about the girl at the bottom of the bed.


 
Laughter

Location: Edinburgh - Museum of Childhood, 42 High Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Laughing, crying and whispering are all said to have been heard coming from empty rooms within the building, and phantom footsteps walk on the upper floors.


 
Robert Louis Stevenson

Location: Edinburgh - Stevenson House (was a museum, now a private residence)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A phantom which has made the occasional appearance at this locale is named as former owner Robert Louis Stevenson.


 
Cutting Ghost

Location: Edinburgh - Greyfriars cemetery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty First century
Further Comments: The spirit, or spirits, here are said to be most upset about the way they were treated in life, and now extract revenge on the living by causing cuts and bruises on anyone who visits the graveyard. That is what the tour guides will tell you, anyway.


 
Crying Infant

Location: Edinburgh - Corn Exchange public house, Leith
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: Heard by the staff, the spirit of the crying child also creates cold gusts of wind and flickers the lights. It is thought the child spend much of its short life locked away in a cupboard.


 
Albert

Location: Edinburgh - Playhouse, Greenside Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dressed in a grey great coat when seen, Albert prefers to make his presence known by creating cold spots. He is thought to have been either a stagehand who died in an accident or a night watchmen who killed himself.


 
Alice

Location: Edinburgh - The Howard Hotel, 34 Great King Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Alice is named as a very kind spirit, and any visitation has left people feeling calm.


 
Angus Roy

Location: Edinburgh - Victoria Terrace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A seaman who was forced to retire after a near fatal accident, Roy can still be heard dragging his crushed leg around the neighbourhood where he spent the last years of his life.


 
Balancing Woman

Location: Edinburgh - Royal Lyceum, Grindlay Street

Further Comments: This spectral figure is seen perched high up on a lighting rig.


 
Bloodied Woman

Location: Edinburgh - St Mary's Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Murdered in 1916, this woman is thought to still stand around the site of her death, looking dazed and confused.


 
Chimney Sweep

Location: Edinburgh - Nicol Edwards public house, Niddry Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This young lad managed to trap himself behind the old chimney stacks in the area and suffocated. He has been reported by members of the public not aware of the story or history.


 
Criminal

Location: Edinburgh - Cowgate area

Further Comments: Lurking near the place he was executed, this ghost has the rope burns from the hangman's rope still around his neck.


 
Deacon Brodie

Location: Edinburgh - Castle Hill and Royal Mile
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Brodie is reputed to walk this area, carrying a lantern. A coach pulled by a team of black horses (which sometimes breath fire) s also said to start its journey here before travelling along the royal mile. The coach is filled with people in black garb. Another phantom, General Dalzell, rides the same route, but this time on a white horse.


 
Grizel

Location: Edinburgh - Grassmarket
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The face of this lady, heavily scarred by fire, has been seen in the area of the Grassmarket - her and her brother were killed by the local authorities for sex crimes and black magic. Some people have also reported seeing her in a phantom coach being pulled by a team of six horses.


 
Lady Mary Douglas

Location: Edinburgh - Dalmahoy House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Lady Mary, manifesting in the form of a white lady, is said to wander along the corridors, looking into the original rooms, Her presence is reported to be calming.


 
Lady Royston

Location: Edinburgh - Caroline Park House (also known as Royston)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This green tinted ghost is said to rise from the ground somewhere in the garden and drift slowly towards the front door before disappearing. Loud banging is sometimes heard coming from one of the rooms, and is thought to be a cannon ball bouncing around - its motivation is unclear.


 
Long Haired Man

Location: Edinburgh - Yew tree at the Manse, Colinton
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This pallid spirit can sometimes be seen hiding behind the large tree.


 
Mary & Family

Location: Edinburgh - Holyrood House Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Mary Queen of Scots, Lord Darnley and Mary's private secretary all haunt this building. A naked ghost, Bald Agnes, appears in the garden - Agnes was striped and tortured on the belief that she was a witch in 1592. In addition, the outer door of the Queen's apartments is said to be stained with Rizzio's blood that will not wash away.


 
Plague Victims

Location: Edinburgh - Mary King's Close, currently buried under the City Chambers
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A whole host of spectres haunt this area; women, children, old men and even animals have been reported haunting the site over the past 350 years. More recently, there have been reports of a ghostly little girl and an 'impish' young boy. The last occupant of the close was forced to move out in 1898 to make way for the City Chambers extension, which now stands over the area.


 
Rosie

Location: Edinburgh - Banshee public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Rosie is said to have been a prostitute who walked in the vaults beneath this pub, and is now said to scratch and mark male members of staff. Another phantom, 'Six Finger Bill', sits under tables and grabs customer's ankles.


 
Suicide

Location: Edinburgh - Former council offices, St. Giles Street

Further Comments: The offices were once thought haunted by a man who hanged himself on the site.


 
The Magician

Location: Edinburgh - Edinburgh Festival Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This tall, dark stranger who lurks in the shadows is thought to be part of a magic act which perished in a fire on the site.


 
White Lady with Sword

Location: Edinburgh - Corstorphine Sycamore Tree (only the stump remains)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This lady, angry at being (once again) stood up by her secret lover, murdered him with his own sword. She now haunts the scene of the crime.


 
White Woman

Location: Edinburgh - Area where sycamore tree once stood, Dovecote Road, Corstorphine
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This white lady stabbed her lover to death by the tree, while fending off his attack. She was executed for the crime, but her ghost holding a sword would return to the tree where the crime was committed. Another version of the story says that she was actually murdered here.
