Viscount Dundee

Further Comments: Killed during the battle of Killiecrankie, Dundee appeared to Lord Balcarres shortly after his death. Edinburgh Castle also claims this event for itself.

Starving Boy

Further Comments: Locked in the dungeon and forgotten about, this child starved to death. He has been briefly sighted around the castle, and also heard whistling.

Eyes

Further Comments: These eyes are thought to belong to a former female owner of the house, and are seen peeking out from dark corners at night.

Lady Mary Crawford

Further Comments: The Lady Mary has been seen drifting over the gardens of the priory, searching for her many pets that she kept during life.

Man in the Golden Chair

Further Comments: A secret tunnel near here was once believed to lead to a room full of gold and jewels, looked after by an old man who waited in a golden chair to hand over the wealth to whoever found it first. A piper and his dog were once sent in to investigate the tunnel - a short time later, the dog came out terrified and the man was never seen again.

Floating Monk

Further Comments: Built on top of a Cathedral's burial ground, this hotel is home to a tall phantom monk that drifts along the corridors.

Mary Sibbald

Location: East Wemyss - MacDuff's Castle

Further Comments: A petty thief, Mary was killed for her crimes - her shadowy form has been reported at the castle ever since.

Female Form

Location: Falkland - Falkland Palace

Further Comments: The phantom woman is said to walk the gallery in the palace, looking for her lost lover.

Black Creature

Location: Firth of Forth - Waters of

Further Comments: The earlier sighting here lasted around fifteen minutes, and the serpentine creature was seen by over one hundred people. The twentieth century sighting was of a totally different creature, this time brown in colour and possessing a horses head with large eyes.

Hanging Jock

Further Comments: Jock's master killed a couple of soldiers and fled to avoid the consequences, leaving the poor assistant to pay the ultimate price for the crime. Now Jock is sometimes seen swinging from the trees by his neck, eyes milky and bulging.

Yolande

Location: Kinghorn - Memorial to Alexander, along road to Burntisland

Further Comments: Dressed in green, the wife of Alexander III appears in the area trying to find her missing husband.

Dead Norrie

Location: Largo - Norrie's cairn

Further Comments: A ghost once appeared in the area and demanded that no cockerel should be allowed to crow in the area nor should a horn be blown, and in return for the quiet who tell the local shepherds the location of a hidden gold mine. One man by the name of Norrie unfortunately forgot the instructions and blew his horn - the ghost appeared and poor Norrie dropped dead on the spot. Norrie's body proved impossible to move, so his friends constructed the cairn over him.

Silver Knight

Further Comments: This armoured figure haunted the area for years - when the land was examined, several aging pieces of chain mail were discovered.

Sir Andrew Bruce

Location: Leuchars - Earlshall Castle

Further Comments: A veteran of the Battle of Flodden, Bruce was renowned for his ruthlessness in hunting down Covenanters, and it may be because of this attitude that he now remains earthbound at the castle. The other shade here is named as a servant woman.

Hare

Further Comments: This ghost is said to be a witch, who evaded capture by transforming herself into a hare.

Petrified Witch

Location: Lomond Hills - Carlin Maggie

Further Comments: This large column of rock is reportedly Maggie the Witch, who failed the Devil on so many occasions he finally hit her with lightning and turned her to stone.

Beast of Balbirnie

Location: Markinch - Woods in the area

Further Comments: Over thirty sightings of a large cat were made in Fife over a twelve month period. Several animal carcasses were found torn to pieces and a ten centimetre long cat footprint was found in soft earth.

Green Jeannie

Further Comments: This florescent shade drifts through the older parts of the building, always after dusk. A soldier with a musket has been reported in the courtyard.

Laird Beardie

Location: Moonzie Moonzie, Fife - Lordscairnie Castle

Further Comments: Beardie played cards against the Devil and lost - the fateful game is now replayed once a year, though it is warned that anyone watching the game will also travel to hell with the Laird at the end of the match.

Screaming

Location: Newburgh - MacDuff's Cross

Further Comments: The cross was once a place where criminals could claim sanctuary, providing they could prove kinship with the Earl of Fife. The haunting screams belong to those who failed to convince others of their relationship with the laird.

Anne Erskine

Location: Saint Monance - Kellie Castle

Further Comments: Anne is still seen around the area where she plummeted to her death. Another ghost, Professor James Lorimer, sits in a castle corridor - he restored the building from a ruin in the late nineteenth century.

Charles Manford

Location: St Andrews - Byre Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Though never seen, the non-threatening presence of the former owner is often felt or heard, and is considered reassuring. The ghost moved with the theatre after it was pulled down in 1970, and relocated under half a kilometre down the road.

Archbishop Hamilton

Further Comments: A supporter of Mary Queen of Scots, Hamilton was arrested and hanged. His shade returned to this castle (though he was neither caught nor executed here).
