Glowing Face

Location: A92 - Road approaching Arbrouth
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A driver and her son encountered a strange woman standing on the roadside. The area was completely unlit, but the woman's head was illuminated as if it was a lantern.


Lost Piper

Location: Arbroath - Dickmountlaw Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Emanating from deep underneath the farmhouse, piping can be heard - a musician named Tam once hid in a nearby cave complex, found himself lost, and is still looking for a way out.


Water Kelpie

Location: Arbroath - St Vigeans' church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water spirit was caught by a holy man and forced to build a church over its former home, a very deep loch. For a good many years, locals refused to enter the building, fearing it would collapse into the hidden waters under the foundations.


Coach and Six

Location: Brechin - Kinnaird Castle and surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: James Carnegie, a former laird at the hall, was well versed in the black arts - this has resulted in his soul being doomed to travel in a black coach pulled by dark horses for the rest of eternity.


Jock Barefut

Location: Careston - Castle and general area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Hanged for stealing a branch from the laird's favourite tree, Jock's swinging shade is sometimes seen dangling from trees in the neighbourhood, when not running through the castle.


Little People

Location: Carmyllie - Carmylie Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once a popular place for pixies to frequent and dance, they have not been seen in recent years. They are said to be protecting a concealed hoard of gold.



Location: Dundee - Bell Street Car Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The car park was built on the site of an old cemetery - one suspects that is may be the cause of the wails and sobs that are occasionally heard here.


Floating Head

Location: Dundee - Benrachett Inn (?), near the Perth Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A couple spending a night here encountered a gruesome bodiless head with matted red hair which drifted across their room. They both leapt from their bed and ran out the room, with the head giving chase, though it finally disappeared through the floor.


Lady Waving Handkerchief

Location: Dundee - Claypotts Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 29 May (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Appearing upset, this white woman frantically waves from a high window once every year - it is rumoured she was having an affair with the Cardinal Beaton.


The Girl

Location: Dundee - Coffin Mill (currently private flats)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A connecting bridge which spans two sections of the former mill is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a girl who crosses it every night. One story says that she was thrown off the bridge after she informed her manager that she was pregnant.



Location: Dundee - HMS Unicorn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Even though the ship never witnessed battle, there are stories of phantom footsteps being on board. The Paranormal Discovery team also report small objects have been thrown at investigators by unseen hands.


Old Lady in Blue

Location: Dundee - Small flat along Morgan Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This aged figure was seen and heard walking along a corridor in the flat - a few days later the occupiers were scared away by another (?) entity, as it tried to tear down a wall within the building.


Charles Bonner

Location: Dundee - The Discovery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Bonner fell to his death from the crow's nest when the ship was sailing on the other side of the world, though his presence is still felt on the deck where his body landed.



Location: Dundee - Wellgate Shopping Centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The strange sounds which echo around the shopping centre at night are said by some to be created by a female ghost who haunts the area. Sceptics argue that the sounds are the natural process of the building settling.


Troops Checking their Dead

Location: Dunnichen - Battlefield of Nechtanesmere
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: January 1950
Further Comments: A woman walking home one night saw men dressed in old clothing moving around the area, searching the corpses which lay at their feet.


Lady Lindsay

Location: Edzell - Edzell Castle (ruins)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lindsay fell into a coma but was thought dead - she awoke in the church as the parish sexton tried to cut off her finger to steal a ring. He fled the church, leaving a cold and weak Lindsay who tried to walk back home to the castle but failed - she died just outside the door. Her shade has been reported at the castle, the church, and in-between, and is said to smell of death.


Lady in Green

Location: Ethie Maines - Ethie Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A mistress of Cardinal Beaton, both her and her lover can also be heard moving around the castle. The sobs of young children have been reported, as have eerily dragging sounds.


Guardian Beast

Location: Fern - Castle of Vayne (ruins)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Protecting a wealth of gold and jewels, this monster tends to remain hidden unless threatened by treasure hunters.


Murdered Labourer

Location: Fettercairn - House next to the village inn (both are no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century?
Further Comments: A house in the village was haunted by the ghost of a builder who was killed during a fight with a work colleague, and the corpse concealed under the base of the building's staircase. The haunting stopped after the murderer confessed fifty years after the crime, and the hidden body removed and given a decent burial.


Man Warming his hands and Feet

Location: Fettercairn - Small cottage, situated next to the old gardens of the Big House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999 - 2001 (and other dates)
Further Comments: This witness, who lived in the building, reporting coming downstairs one night into the lounge area and seeing the figure of a man warming his hands and feet, sitting by the fire in the dark. The entity appeared to be wearing gamekeepers or gardeners clothing. Although the witness could not physically move, he reported an amazing feeling of peace. Finally, the observer made a dive for the light switch, and when the room was illuminated, the ghostly figure disappeared.


Poor Thief

Location: Finavon - Finavon Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Caught breaking into the castle grounds to steal food and firewood, this man was hanged and left as a warning for anyone else who would try the same crime. There is also a local rhyme that states when the castle is reduced to dust, the world will end...


Drowning Figures

Location: Forfar - Loch
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: When the loch freezes over
Further Comments: A ghostly party of men have been seen in the ice; only from the waist up, they look as if they have fallen through and are slowly dying. The surrounding area is also haunted by a beautiful woman who was buried alive after being unfaithful to her lover who killed himself when he discovered her betrayal.



Location: Forfar - Private residence, Glenclova Terrace
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1990
Further Comments: The living room of this property was invaded for a few moments by a strong smell of tobacco smoke. The family dog was also visibly upset, hackles up and growling at the corner of the room. Within moments, the smell vanished and the dog's demeanour returned to normal.


Construction of Gallows

Location: Glamis - Glamis Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1880 (Gallows heard)
Further Comments: Not shy of more than a few hauntings, Glamis can claim the following. . . The sounds of a set of gallows being constructed, Lady Glamis drifting in mist around the clock tower, the unknown ghost in the 'Haunted Room' which caused a previous owner to faint when he went to investigate the mysterious sounds contained within, a white lady that drifts the corridors, 'Jack the Runner' who's long legs carry him down the same corridors, a black page boy that quickly appears and disappears near a sitting room, a pale girl who is dragged away by an invisible force in the courtyard, a giant in armour that stands over and looks down on people in bed, and a re-enacted murder in the parlour.

Location: Glamis - Malcolm's Stone (tombstone)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ghost has been observed around this ancient headstone.
