George Whewell

Further Comments: If removed from the public house, this discoloured skull which once belonged to executioner George Whewell is said to scream until returned.

Flying Wedge

Location: Buxton - 2500 ft above the area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: February 1996
Further Comments: Two pilots in a 737 reported narrowly avoiding a large black wedge shaped UFO while flying into the airport from Milan. The object passed so close to the passenger aircraft that one of the pilots ducked.

Photographed Falling

Location: Chadderton - Kingsley & Forrester Ltd, Gorse Mill, lift shaft
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1987 or 1988
Further Comments: An engineer in the building photographed the lift shaft, and discovered a white mist appeared on the final print, resembling a falling figure. A local story reports a little girl once fell down the shaft and died. The image can be seen in 'The Best of Fortean Times - The True Life X-Files'.

Lady of the Lake

Location: Charnock Richard - Park Hall

Further Comments: A radiant white female form has been seen a couple of times in the lake within the Hall grounds - it is believed to be a woman who drowned herself after falling in love with a monk. His ghost in turn may haunt the hall.

Leaping Figures

Location: Chipping - Lanes around the demolished Leagram Hall

Further Comments: Car engines have been known to cut out in this area without reason. The roads that skirted the hall is locally renowned for their ghostly figures who leap out from behind bushes, and strange mists and noises. The postmistress blamed the death of her dog on three shadowy figures that chased the canine, terrifying the animal so much it refused to eat.

Lizzie Dean

Location: Chipping - The Sun Inn

Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A former cleaner at the establishment, Lizzie took her own life after her other half ran away. Her ghost, seen in maids outfit, still walks the walls of the building, and sometimes disappears through them.

John Charnock

Location: Chorley - Astley Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: Executed for his role in the Bablington plot (1584), Charnock is said to still walk his childhood home. Other ghosts reported here include a lady in grey, another lady in turquoise, and a little girl in Elizabethan clothes who drowned in the nearby lake. The most recent ghost report featured a phantom gamekeeper and his dog who patrolling the ground by the riverbank.

Further Comments: Phantom footsteps and the sounds of doors opening and slamming brought staff running in the maternity wing, just in time to discover and save a baby from suffocation.

White Lady

Location: Chorley - Heskin Hall

Further Comments: Hanged during the Civil War by a traitorous priest, this female member of the Mundesley family still returns home. The beam of wood from which her body dangled is considered lucky if you touch it.

Fred the Technician

Location: Chorley - Little Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2010s
Further Comments: Fred is one of several entities said to haunt the site, other others being a shadowy figure seen on stage, a man wearing a trilby, a Victorian woman with a child, and an actress.

Old Woman in Black

Location: Church - Gatty Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The ghost of an old woman dressed in dark clothing reportedly resides in the park.


Location: Clayton le Moors - Dunkenhalgh Hall (currently a hotel?) and nearby bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A former maid at the hall, Lucette fell pregnant after a torrid affair with the master - he was not interested in her long term future, so Lucette took her own life. The maid's misty white form now comes back around Christmas to remind others of her fate.


Location: Clayton le Moors - Mercer Park

Further Comments: Shadowy people are said to have been spotted moving around the this park. When Mercer House was derelict, candlelight would occasionally be spotted in the attic (although that could have been just trespassers).

Sid in the Cellar

Location: Clayton le Woods - Halfway House public house, Preston Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999
Further Comments: This shade, sometimes seen sitting by the window, is more at home in the basement where he plays with the lights and says ' excuse me' to passing staff.

Blood Stains

Location: Clitheroe - Bridge

Further Comments: The ghostly blood from a man murdered on the bridge is said to periodically pool here.

Annie Druce

Location: Clitheroe - Swan and Royal Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Annie was disowned by her parents so moved to this hotel where she killed herself.

Shadow Man

Location: Clitheroe - Unnamed shop along Moor Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 2000s?
Further Comments: A worker on the premises quit after encountering a five foot tall shadowy figure which appeared a little over a metre away from them. Before the sighting, the witness had heard the sounds of footsteps and a barrel rolling on the floor above.

Peggy o' Nell

Location: Clitheroe - Waddow Hall

Further Comments: A former servant of the hall, Peggy upset the owner of the property who wished her dead. Unfortunately, this came true, and Peggy's ghost came to extract revenge. To pacify her, it is thought the owner of the building has to sacrifice a living creature every seven years. If this doesn't happen, then Peggy takes a human life by drowning the first passerby she sees.

Further Comments: An entity here was said to keep a former owner company - the old woman would sit by the fire with the spirit next to her.


Location: Cockden - Hey Well

Further Comments: The little people were said to use this area as a meeting ground.

Home of the Devil

Location: Cockerham - River Cocker and surrounding area

Further Comments: The Devil once decided that his new home would be here, but a cunning school teacher managed to drive him away after convincing Old Nick that he should try to make a rope of sand which could be used in the river without dissolving.


Location: Colne - Alkincoats Park

Further Comments: The walled garden within the park is said to have a sense of sadness and foreboding, and always feels cold even on the hottest of days.

Poor Girl

Location: Colne - Colne Hall, near Albert Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This petite shade appears to be a young girl from a Victorian poorhouse, dressed in little more than rags.

White Woman

Location: Colne - Hare and Hounds public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pub is rumoured to be the home of a phantom white lady.

Angry Dwarf

Location: Colne - Hobstones Farm
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1950 to 1974
Further Comments: This entity, part fairy and part ghost, was seen many times and drove out several families, until exorcised by clergy. The bleeding, severed arm was said to be the most noticeable and terrifying feature of the manifestation. Phantom cavaliers were also reported, as were violent poltergeist outbreaks.
