Further Comments: Two skulls are currently stored in the Towers, that when stored in previous places, have been blamed for causing two ghostly men to appear and begin fighting. Poltergeist activity is also attached to the stories, and a woman apparently dressed in mourning costume haunts the staircase of the tower (and possibly an old path outside the tower). The area outside the tower is haunted by a phantom coach.

Emily

Further Comments: This female ghost, dressed in black, appeared to the assistant manager on three occasions. She was described as slim, late twenties or early thirties, with dark hair and high cheek bones. The entity has been nicknamed Emily by staff.

Middle Aged Love

Further Comments: A couple in their late thirties haunt his building - they have been seen romantically holding hands over a table, where they sit and stare longingly at each other. They both wear Victorian clothing.

Bloodied Hands

Date / Time: Late twentieth century (blood story), and 2000s (Geny)
Further Comments: A woman drinking at the public house found her hands covered in blood as she started to leave, though she had no wounds of her own, and no other source for the liquid could be discovered. More recently, the spirit of Geny, an eight year old girl, has be blamed for tugging at skirts, pinching people, and moving items around, while a phantom dog runs around chairs in the museum room.

Grey Lady

Further Comments: This woman drowned in the cold waters of the canal, and now tries to lure men into the water to join her for the rest of time.

Further Comments: Seen once a year, Bibby rides his coach with his decapitated head in his lap.

Starving Girl

Further Comments: This young woman fought against her parents who had arranged her wedding - as punishment she was locked in the tower and forgotten about. She soon starved to death, but her ghost still protests. A visitor to the site in 2009 felt something touch their back and briefly spotted a dark human shape which quickly disappeared.

Further Comments: Loud footsteps can be heard traversing empty parts of the building - it may be the last remnants of the haunted skulls that once were on display here, since relocated to Turton Tower.

Lady with Dog

Further Comments: A male witness at the gate of this building spotted a lady in a white dress, walking her dog in the distance. The witness turned for a brief moment, and when he looked back, the figure and dog had vanished - there was nowhere for them to have disappeared to. The same witness reported that several years previous he had heard someone whisper his name at the hall, even though the nearest person was some one hundred metres away.

Blood Stained Steps

Further Comments: The body of Christina Collins, murdered by three boatmen, was pulled up these steps - they occasionally still reveal the blood stains her body left while being dragged.

Further Comments: The footprint in a slab of stone is now on display within the church. It is said to belong to a Catholic who, after arguing with a Protestant, declared 'if my doctrine be untrue, may my foot sink in stone' - upon which it did.

Further Comments: This boggart would leap on passing carts, causing them to stop dead. He once climbed on a hearse taking a dead man to the church, and the local priest banished the entity forever.

Further Comments: The ghost of Peg O'Nell is said to haunt the River Ribble, wanting an animal sacrificed to it once every seven years. It was in this village that a man once tried to cross the river before the sacrifice was made - and promptly drowned.

Further Comments: Cleaning staff and the caretaker all reported a ghostly child who would skip and sing down corridors in the school. They also heard the unnerving sounds of a baby moaning.

Further Comments: Lord William Towneley and his dog appear once a year, giving chase to a nimble doe. Another variant of the tale names the hunter as Gabriel Ratchets, while yet another story states that a man and his wife manifest on the same date - he killed and buried her on the spot.

Further Comments: Reportedly built on the site of a graveyard from which some bodies were not moved, a number of spooky occurrences have been reported in this shop, including doors opening without human intervention, exploding light bulbs, and aports.

Horse Drawn Carriage

Further Comments: Travelling in a horse drawn carriage, a ghostly woman is said to leave Hufling Hall and head to Towneley Hall. It is said that you are more likely to hear the horses when it is quiet then see anything.

Further Comments: A local name for their version of the shuck, Trash was said to be very hairy, with feet that created splashing noises no matter what surface it stepped on. Death would follow a sighting.

Young Girl Laughing

Further Comments: Members of staff at this retail store have reported unexplained breathing and footsteps in the stock room. Clothes hangers on the rails in this room have been heard moving on their own, while the sound of a young girl laughing and her small pattering footsteps has been heard. There are reports of scraping, dragging footsteps downstairs in the cellar and the presence of a man felt.

Visiting Devil

Further Comments: A large scorched patch on some flagstones in the building is explained away by a story which involves a group of students silly enough to try to summon the Devil - as he climbed out of the ground, the pupils panicked and hit Old Nick with books, stones and anything they could grab, until he disappeared back to Hell.
