White Lady

Further Comments: Some people believe that this phantom figure is Margaret Radclyffe, Queen Elizabeth's favourite Maid of Honour. She died of a broken heart in 1559 shortly after the death of her brother.

Dark Figure

Location: Salford - Private residence along Eccles New Road

Further Comments: As well as a shadowy figure spotted in the hallway, there have been minor poltergeist like activity, such as items moving and rapping.

Coded Knocks

Location: Salford - Private residence along Tully Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 24 December 1959 - February 1960
Further Comments: For a two month period a family living here were plagued by knocking which would carry on throughout the nights. Psychical researchers realised that the knocks were spelling out messages for neighbour Mrs Roberts, and they appeared to be from her recently deceased father-in-law. After a special service was conducted in the house the knocking ceased.

Further Comments: Filming for a paranormal documentary took place in this public house, inspired by a witness's claims that she had experienced disembodied footsteps and had heard a girl crying when staying at the building as a child.

Pair of Lovers

Location: Samlesbury Bottoms - River Darwen
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The relationship between a male Protestant and a female Catholic ended in tragedy when the Catholic woman's brother murdered the Protestant to prevent their relationship enduring. The girl went mad and died soon after - the lovers were reunited in death, their ghosts haunting the banks of the river.

Two Brothers

Location: Saxby - The Beeches

Further Comments: The two brothers had fought over an inherence - the younger killing the elder. This scene is reenacted in the garden, where the disposal of the body in the pond is also observed. A figure in black is also seen in the house, normally in the bedrooms.

Well Woman

Location: Scouthead - Old Original public house

Further Comments: This female entity that haunts the building is said to have been murdered nearby and her body dumped in the pub's well.

Modern Myth?

Location: Sefton - Church and roads in the area
Type: Werewolf
Date / Time: 1970s - 1990s
Further Comments: First hand accounts appear to be rare, but one story says a nurse and her taxi driver both spotted a werewolf in this area.

Presence on the Stairs

Location: Sefton - Private house along Arundel Avenue

Further Comments: A witness here heard the front door being opened by key - when she investigated she saw nothing, though felt an invisible presence pushed past her.

Little Boy

Location: Sefton - Private residence, Ford Lane, Litherland, Merseyside

Further Comments: One man twice spotted a phantom little boy in the living room, while other family members have heard strange sounds or felt 'someone' watching them.

Karaoke Screaming

Location: Sefton - Private residence, Park Lane area
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1994 - mid 2000s
Further Comments: The poltergeist here would unlock doors, turn lights on and move furniture around. In one instance screaming lasting five minutes emerged from a karaoke machine which had been stored on top of a wardrobe untouched for over a year.

Floating Seaman

Location: Sefton - Punch Bowl Inn and nearby churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1973
Further Comments: Thought to have drowned at sea and his body stored in the inn until burial, this blue clothed sailor has been observed floating around the building. Sometimes only his head and shoulders are visible, protruding from a misty base. The entity was also once seen nearby, appearing to be digging at a grave in the churchyard.

Black Hound

Location: Singleton - Unknown cottage

Further Comments: A priest had to be called in to rid a building of a large black dog that had taken up residence - the creature was banished to under the river Wyre, allowed only to come back when the river dried up.

Man in Black Cloak

Location: Skelmersdale - Sports Centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom figure is blamed when electrical equipment inexplicitly cuts out or blows up.

Chair of Despair

Location: Southport - Oast House public house
Type: Curse
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: A chair in this public house has reported as being cursed after eight people who sat there died.

Former Occupants?

Location: Southport - Unnamed nursing home
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: There are many spooky stories told by past and present staff; the empty lift moves between floors at night, many reports of phantom figures exist, and sounds of footsteps are heard along deserted corridors. The bells for the call system have also gone off in empty rooms.

Mrs Eastham

Location: St Annes - Fields connecting Church Road with Heyhouses Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth or early twentieth century
Further Comments: Eastham's ghost was seen by a local man taking a shortcut, a couple of days after her death at a nearby farmhouse. It was seen again a short time later by another farmer, and again by a farmhand who reported her staring into his bedroom window.

The Toll

Further Comments: The ringing of church bells from a church taken by the sea many years ago can be heard prior to a storm.

White Figure

Location: St Helens - Castle Hill area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: This pale figure, thought to be connected to the archaeological dig in the same area, is said to have once pushed a motorcyclist from his bike. It is still seen, normally lurking behind trees.

Face at the Window

Location: St Helens - Croppers Hill, Prescot Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: A factory which once stood here was reportedly haunted by a figure that would stare longingly through the windows of the building. Though the building no longer stands, local children still scare each other by saying the area remains haunted.

Stone Throwing

Location: St Helens - Factory

Date / Time: Circa 1885
Further Comments: Stones were thrown around the factory with no source being discovered.

Landing UFO

Location: St Helens - Field in Rainhill area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: January 1978
Further Comments: Robert Bennett told the St Helens Star newspaper how he had worked with police and radio enthusiasts in chasing a strange craft across the St Helens sky. The pursuit ended after three police officers watched the ufo take off after landing in a field.

Further Comments: Children at the school would report a phantom woman dressed in black and white, who appeared to take up residence in the upper part of the building.

Grey Lady

Location: St Helens - Taylor Park

Further Comments: Two girls walking a dog spotted a ghostly figure walk out of nearby bushes. The female phantom took the form of a young girl with blonde hair that came down to her shoulders, and wore nineteenth century dress.

Man Dressed in Black

Location: St Helens - Theatre Royal

Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: There are several people in the running who could be this ghost (including a former manager and a World War Two pilot), who wears a black suit and long coat.
