Robert Clay

Location: Preston - George Hotel

Further Comments: One landlord was driven out of the building because he could not tolerate the mysterious presence of Mr Clay. The entity would manifest in the form of a tall bearded man with a deep voice, dressed in clothing which dated back two hundred years. Robert Clay is thought to have killed two young children on the site, burying the bodies in the cellar.

Further Comments: A small body of Roman troops still patrol this area, a tall officer in glinting armour heading up the team.

Toilet Flushing

Location: Preston - Private house in the Ashton estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: This ghost was reportedly the previous owner of the house that died, prior to the new tenants moving in. The spirit developed the routine of running its hands over the heads of those in bed, before rattling doors and flushing the toilet during the early hours.


Location: Preston - River Ribble

Further Comments: Sheila Smith reported seeing a serpent in the waters of the river. It was thought that the creature was likely to have been an eel.

Ringing Bells

Location: Preston - Site of old monastery (estimated to be A59 / Friargate area)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Local legend says that a church which once stood here sunk into the earth and its bells can be heard to ring on Christmas Eve.

Silent Vulcan

Location: Preston - Sky near to the university campus
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: Christened the 'Silent Vulcan' by students because of its similarity to a Vulcan bomber (but without any sound), this large aircraft was seen by a student in the skies of Preston. He stated the object shot off towards the dock area, moving at incredible speed.

Foggy Column

Location: Radcliffe - Commercial Hotel (no longer standing)

Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: Several workers in the building reported a strange pillar of white mist that would grow from the floor, disappearing after a couple of minutes. The apparition would be accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature.

Hanging Man

Location: Radcliffe - Radcliffe Infirmary Nurses Accommodation

Further Comments: A resident reported spotting the ghostly figure of a man hanging by a rope in the corner of their room. The sighting was accompanied by a banging noise and a flashing light bulb.

Dark Hound

Location: Radcliffe - Radcliffe Tower

Further Comments: A hound of hell was once said to lurk around the tower after dark. Some say it was the reincarnation of a murdered girl, who was fed to her unsuspecting family by her stepmother.

School Girl

Location: Rainford - Golden Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This public house is reportedly haunted by a teenage girl, who was raped and murdered by her headmaster just outside the building. A phantom soldier has also been reported, the son of a landlord who died during a world war.


Location: Rawtenstall - Craven Heifer public house

Further Comments: A photograph taken by the landlord in the cellar after it flooded reportedly showed a pair of child's legs, the owner of which could not be accounted for. Taps are also said to turn themselves on.

Further Comments: A tall, lean woman in grey, this shade likes to haunt the guest bedrooms and the cellar. She is responsible for the strange sounds which occasionally echo around the building at night.

Grey Lady

Location: Rawtenstall - The Old Cobblers Inn

Further Comments: It has been several years since this public house was last disturbed by the ghost.

Silver Suit

Location: Reddish - Exact area not unknown
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1976
Further Comments: Several children encountered an entity wearing a silver suit. The figure had long blonde hair, a short grey beard, and hovered fifteen centimetres above the ground.

Pennies from Heaven

Location: Reddish - St Elizabeth's Churchyard
Type: Other
Date / Time: May 1981
Further Comments: Witnesses heard dozens of coins rain down in the churchyard, falling from an empty sky, though some were quite deeply embedded in the earth.

Tree Spirit

Location: Ribchester - Hothersall Hall

Further Comments: A ghost that pestered this household was laid under a nearby tree - while the plant lives, the spirit can not escape.

Bloody Man

Location: Ribchester - Osbaldeston Hall (now a farm house)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Spewing blood from an open wound in his chest, this person was killed in a duel on site, and periodically returns to remind the living. There are floorboards within the building that are still bloodstained, so the legend states.

Evil Spirit

Location: Ringley - Vicarage

Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This building made the news when the vicar announced that he had exorcised a malevolent presence from there.

Lancaster Bomber

Location: Rishworth - Saddleworth Moor, along M62
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 15 August 1995, approx 14:30h
Further Comments: A father and daughter driving eastbound spotted a Lancaster bomber flying nearby, smoke coming from a left right hand engine. They passed under Scammonden Bridge, and after coming out were no longer able to see the aircraft.

Drifting Figure

Location: Rivington - Rivington Castle

Further Comments: A team of workmen on site claimed to have seen a strange white figure floating around the castle before it disappeared.

John Ellis

Location: Rochdale - April Cotton Florists, 413 Oldham Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: January 2008
Further Comments: Even though Rochdale's last public executioner John Ellis committed suicide in 1932, his former barbershop is still thought to contain his shade. An invisible entity pushed one man while he was working alone in the shop, and later slapped the same man's rear.

Internal Rain

Location: Rochdale - Bungalow along Hill Top Close
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1986
Further Comments: A family living here were plagued by regular flooding from an unknown source - investigations could not find where the water was coming from. Sounds of phantom coughing and smell of smoke also filled the rooms.

Two Children

Location: Rochdale - Clegg Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: Though murdered by their uncle who wanted their inheritance, the ghosts of the two children have managed to survive at least one exorcism. The shades are thought to have finally driven their murderer mad. A visitor to the ruin in 2002 felt something take her hand as she walked through the door, and another presence catch her as she slipped in the mud outside.

Male Figure

Location: Rochdale - Norden Riviera Open Air Swimming Pool (no longer standing)

Date / Time: 1940s - 1960s
Further Comments: A phantom male figure was said to have been seen on a number of occasions standing outside this open air pool. It is not known if the figure remained after the pool was demolished in the mid 1960s.

Baum Rabbit

Location: Rochdale - St Mary's Churchyard (no longer present)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century?
Further Comments: A ghostly bunny haunted this area for many years, and was reportedly shot at least once - each time the buckshot passing straight through its body. The ghostly figure of a man was also reported at the churchyard, drifting slowly above the ground.
