Secret Fairies

Location: Andreas - Shan Cashtal barrow
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The fairies here once travelled to and from the barrow using underground passageways leading to a nearby churchyard (at Maughold).


 
 


Sprites & Pixies

Location: Ballona - Ballona Bridge
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 20 June (reoccurring)
Further Comments: On this day the fairy population comes out in force. If they are not acknowledged by any one crossing the bridge, the fairy folk have no hesitation in making their presence felt.


 
 


Fairy Home

Location: Braddan - 'Real' Fairy Bridge
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Bridge still present
Further Comments: This is another site said to be home to the fairies, although details are fleeting.


 
 


Mer Children

Location: Calf of Man - Rocky area, exact location not known
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1810
Further Comments: Three men from Douglas found two merchildren on the rocks. One was already dead, but they saved the second child and took it to their town. The creature was described as around 60.3 centimetres in length and brown in colour, although the scales around its tail were slightly violet, and the hair on its head light green.


 
 


Smoky Woman

Location: Castletown - 77 Malew Street
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Autumn 1957
Further Comments: Alasdair Alpin MacGregor wrote that a smoky female apparition appeared to the owner of this cottage. The entity was blue/grey in colour and watched the owner before disappearing through a wall.


 
 


Writing on the Wall

Location: Castletown - Building once used as staff accommodation
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1995
Further Comments: A former occupier of this building reported that the upper part of the building had an evil feeling, and some new staff would not spend more than a night there. One witness, alone in the building, took a shower. Returning to the bathroom a short time later to pick up their watch, they found vile words written in shaving foam on the walls. A priest was called who said that he felt a presence but it would not hurt anyone.


 
 


Woman in Black

Location: Castletown - Castle Rushen, Eagle Tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: Watched by four boys, this phantom female figure wore a head dress and had dark hands. Local legend says that the woman was once executed for murdering her child. Another ghost that haunts the castle, this time in the basement, has been seen sleeping with a huge sword by his side.


 
 


Angry Voices

Location: Castletown - Hill Fort
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The area is said to be haunted by the sound of angry voices, a large shuck-like dog, and a cleric.


 
 


Soldiers

Location: Cregneish - Meayll Stone Circle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom army comprising of soldiers and their horses are said to haunt the area round these ancient burial chambers.


 
 


Buggane

Location: Crosby - St Trinian's Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This monster was stirred by the ringing of the bells of this church - it tore off the roof in order to silence the peals.


 
 


Gef the Talking Mongoose

Location: Dalby - Doarlish Cashen farm
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1931 - 1935
Further Comments: Part poltergeist, part cryptozoological wonder, Gef attached itself to the nine year old Mary who lived in the farmhouse. Over a four year period, the creature (if that was it was) created raps, manifested voices which communicated with the family, and took the form of a small ferret like creature, with fingers instead of claws.


 
 


Woman

Location: Douglas - Douglas Head Hotel (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1975
Further Comments: The phantom woman reputed to haunt this site was very active, generating poltergeist-like effects (moving chairs and ashtrays, and opening doors) and manifesting on the second floor.


 
 


Falling Soldier

Location: Douglas - Falcan Cliff Hotel (no longer operational and converted into offices)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A German soldier who jumped off the tower was once occasionally seen repeating his fall. It was also said that animals disliked entering the tower.


 
 


Ballafletcher Drinking Glass

Location: Douglas - Seafield House (now known as Arragon House?)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Present in the house circa nineteenth century
Further Comments: This antique crystal goblet containing a protective spirit, was said to bring great luck to any family that owed it; if broken, misfortune would follow. It was said that the owner of the cup, a Colonel Wilks, would only use it twice a year (Christmas and Easter) to give thanks to the goblet and spirit.


 
 


Wanderer

Location: Douglas - Summerland (demolished 2005)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s - 2005
Further Comments: A terrible fire which killed 51 people occurred at the complex on 2 August 1973. Summerland was rebuilt, but staff and visitors to the site reported the sounds of screaming, hearing footsteps along empty passages, and occasionally seeing ghostly people wandering around the area.


 
 


Banging

Location: Douglas - Victoria Road prison
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1967 - 2008
Further Comments: Norman Quilliam reported hearing of several ghosts while he worked here including banging on the ceiling of a cell in which someone had committed suicide.


 
 


Wife Seeker

Location: Glen Roy - Nikkesen's Pool
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The home of a beautiful male water spirit, the creature sometimes emerges from the pool looking for a young maiden to kidnap and take as his bride.


 
 


Army of Small People

Location: Greeba - Greeba Castle, road outside of, & St Trinian's Church
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The fairies here are said to ensure that no one ever builds a roof on the nearby St Trinian's Church. A witness watched a long line of little people dancing down the road, coming from the direction of the church.


 
 


Fairies in Retreat

Location: Kirk Bride - Lough Goayr
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Locals say that when the fairies were last seen here, they shouted out 'Hey for Ireland!'.


 
 


Moddey Dhoo

Location: Peel - Peel Castle
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1660
Further Comments: The local shuck, the Moddey Dhoo, haunted the local guardroom - appearing at night to sleep by their fire. One guard grew tired of hiding away from it and went to face the creature alone; he returned soon after, silent and dying, but the creature was never seen again.


 
 


Concealed Face

Location: Peel - Unnamed Guesthouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003 - 2007, especially winter
Further Comments: This phantom man was renown for hiding its face from onlookers, while ghostly children in Victorian dress were reported elsewhere. Poltergeist activity was also reported in the building, including locked doors that reopened and small items (such as keys) that disappeared for a few days before reappearing.


 
 


Lonely Man

Location: Port Erin - Tower overlooking bay
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man who either killed himself or was murdered walks up the hill towards the tower before vanishing.


 
 


Red Eyed Dog

Location: Ramsey - Area around Milntown
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1927 and 1931
Further Comments: The large black dog here has glowing red eyes. It has walked passed two witnesses without interfering with them, suggesting a benign entity.


 
 


Blessing

Location: Santon - Fairy Bridge
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: It is considered unlucky not to say 'good day' to the fairies as you cross the bridge. In recent years, people have begun to leave gifts and notes on a nearby tree for the fairies.


 
 


Spherical Object

Location: Sea between Isle of Man and Belfast - Sky
Type: UFO
Date / Time: February 1985
Further Comments: A captain, first officer and flight engineer of an aircraft flying from Belfast to the Isle of Man reported a bright white spherical object that became an orange beam.
