Axed Stone

Location: Tidenham - Ouduceus's Stone (no longer present)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A standing stone some 1.2 metres thick was cut in two by Bishop Ouduceus welding an axe, proving his powers to a then less sceptical Gildas.

Contest

Location: Tidenham - The Broadstone, between village and Woolastaston
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Stone still present
Further Comments: The Devil and the giant Jack o'Kent had a stone throwing contest - the Devil's stone landed here, while Jack's landed way over the River Severn, winning him the game.

Miss Nicholls

Location: Upton St Leonards - Unknown house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: After hanging herself, the ghost of Miss Nicholls returned to haunt her home. It took twelve people to lay the ghost, which was trapped under the base of a fireplace.

Once were Warriors

Location: West Tump - Barrow
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A female witness claims to have seen four men dressed in ancient clothing standing on the hill, holding Stone Age weapons.

Green Disk

Location: Whiteshill - Skies above the village
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 04 October 2018
Further Comments: Several observers watched the fluorescent green ufo as it hovered over the area. A driver on a nearby road managed to photograph the object.

Man in Red

Location: Whittington - Church of St Bartholomew
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 22 January 1985
Further Comments: A man dressed in red who vanished from the church was named by some as a former landowner Sir Lawrence (or Laurence) Tanfield.

Sir Laurence Tanfield

Location: Whittington - General area
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A former landowner in the area, Sir Laurence returned after dying and can be seen driving a coach pulled by four black horses. It is said that bad luck falls on any witnesses.

Girl

Location: Whittington - Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One story says that workmen refused to enter certain parts of the property after spotting a ghostly young girl sitting on a rocking chair.

Battlefield Figures

Location: Wick - Freezing Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This area is haunted by several ghosts, all wearing clothing which places them to the Civil War era (the hill was the site of a battle).

Flecked cat

Location: Winchcombe - Area around Mount View Drive
Type: ABC
Date / Time: April 2012
Further Comments: Several witnesses reported seeing a large cat around this new housing estate. One woman said it was the size of a Labrador with a flecked brown coloured coat. Fur from the creature had been recovered, but at the time of writing, DNA analysis has not been carried out on the evidence.

Monks in a field

Location: Winchcombe - Belas Knap, a long barrow situated above the town
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One visitor to the site stated she looked across the fields and watched a group of monks approaching the barrow. She left for a few minutes, and on her return realised that the field now looked different; shorter grass, fewer trees, and the figures had vanished. The area around the barrow is locally acknowledged to be 'strange'. The road running by Belas Knap is said to be haunted by a blue figure which unnerves drivers as it steps on into their paths.

Monk with No Legs

Location: Winchcombe - Cowl Lane, Pike Bank area, and Old Corner Cupboard Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1993
Further Comments: Reports of a ghostly black monk coming from these areas are not uncommon, some saying that the figure looked as if he sunk slightly into the ground, others saying he floats two foot above the path.

Floating Monk

Location: Winchcombe - Railway station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dressed in a dark robe, this holy figure floats a half a metre above the ground.

Choir

Location: Winchcombe - Site of Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Plainchant and other religious songs have been heard emanating from the site of the old abbey, burnt down hundreds of years ago.

Patter of Feet

Location: Winchcombe - Ye Old Corner Cupboard Public House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The sound of a child's feet running around the building has been reported several times, even though no children have been present.

Fading Trio

Location: Withington - The Mill Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Seen standing by the fireplace together, this small group of shades featured a woman with a large hat being flanked by two men. She could be a former landlady who drowned in the nearby river.

Dead Pagans

Location: Wotton under Edge - Ancient Ram Inn, currently a private house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Built on the site of a burial pit, this former public house is said to have a heavy, oppressive atmosphere. A misty entity appeared on one photograph taken here, while several ghost hunts have turned up numerous displaced spirits.

Rattling Chains

Location: Wotton under Edge - Newark Park hunting lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A classic sign of a haunting, the sounds would often be accompanied by the silken rustling of an invisible dress passing, thumps, bangs, and a sense of intense cold.

Geoffrey

Location: Wyck - Wyck Rissington Rectory
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Canon Cheales carried out an exorcism of his home after being repeatedly disturbed between 22:00 - 02:00 by strange noises and rattling door handles by a presence known as Geoffrey.
