White Figure Sitting

Location: Nailsworth - Roads east of area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Perched on a bench (it is unknown whether the chair is also spectral), the figure waits by the roadside.


 
 


Woman in Sleeveless Dress

Location: Naunton - B4068 near town
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Summer 1998
Further Comments: A Doctor driving down this road pulled over to help a woman who waved his car down, but she vanished without trace as he climbed out of his vehicle. He searched the area but found nothing.


 
 


Figures in White

Location: Naunton - B4068 near the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Woman in 1998, Monk in 2000
Further Comments: This area would appear to be quite haunted; the phantom woman with dark hair seen here vanished after waving to a driver, while a ghostly monk walked out in front of a car travelling at the speed limit - the figure passed straight through the vehicle. More reports exist of a car just losing power along the road, with the occupants claiming invisible water ran over their feet...


 
 


Smith on Horseback

Location: Nether Lypiatt (estate) - Nether Lypiatt Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 January (reoccurring)
Further Comments: An owner of the horse once hanged a blacksmith for failing to complete a piece of work within a tight time limit - the date of the death is marked by the appearance of a large white horse carrying the dead smith. Another report says that the ghost of the smith does not actually appear, but unlocks and opens the gates. A spirit in the house itself, that of a grey lady, has been seen several times, and there are unsubstantiated reports that it has been exorcised.


 
 


Cavalier

Location: Newent - Old Court House
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: A phantom cavalier was spotted as he walked through the wall of a bedroom. The entity threw a cloak over his shoulder before disappearing.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Notgrove - Long Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The long barrow was said to conceal a coffin made from gold. Nothing was found when the stones were exposed, and now the site has been (badly) covered up.


 
 


Queen Margaret of Anjou

Location: Owlpen - Owlpen Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: Last seen by a group of children during World War 2, the wife of Henry VI is said to pine for her dead son Edward. More recently, poltergeist like effects and the sounds of phantom footsteps have been reported, as have the sounds of phantom children.


 
 


Ninety Nine Yews

Location: Painswick - Churchyard
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Ninety nine yew trees stand in this churchyard. It is said that it is impossible to grow another yew tree in the churchyard, as the devil always comes and removes it. . .


 
 


Fawn Coloured Cat

Location: Podsmead - Widden Field
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2012
Further Comments: Julie Marlow spoke to the local newspaper about observing a fast moving, Alsatian-sized creature which was fawn in colour in a field close to her home. Marlow said friends had seen a similar creature in the area.


 
 


The Black Abbot

Location: Prestbury - Church and churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Christmas and Easter (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Maintaining the same route every year, this ghost materialises in the church before crossing the churchyard and disappearing through a wall in the High Street. It was photographed in 1990 by a Mr Stafford.


 
 


Strangler

Location: Prestbury - Cleeves Corner
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ghostly figure supposedly loiters around the area, ready to choke anyone who it takes a disliking to.


 
 


Little Old Lady

Location: Prestbury - High Street and Mill Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Several witnesses have seen strange figures drifting in and around these roads, and though differ slightly in appearance, it is suggested that they are all the same entity.


 
 


Trotting

Location: Prestbury - Prestbury House Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Phantom hooves are said to been heard moving around this area, while legend states a ghostly young girl moves around the garden. In June 2012, owners Linda Gardner and David Miller said that the site was not haunted, and that a former owner had invented the stories to increase trade.


 
 


Royalist Courier

Location: Prestbury - Road through the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Galloping through the village, this Royalist rode into a rope strung across the road and was killed. His shade is still said to linger.


 
 


Charging Horseman

Location: Prestbury - Shaw Green Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 04 May (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Killed by a Lancastrian arrow in the 1400's, this glowing messenger is doomed to carry his cargo forevermore. Another story says he was decapitated by a thin wire that was placed across the road.


 
 


Rising Woman

Location: Redbrook - Swan Pool
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local story says a woman and her young child were murdered near here, and the bodies thrown into the pool. Her shade now rises from the water, holding a crying baby. The area is also said to be home to a phantom coach, which has (a different?) woman peering from the window.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Rodmarton - Windmill Tump
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This is another location where a golden coffin is reputed to be buried.


 
 


Lavender Lady

Location: Sheepscombe - Butchers Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The pub and the surrounding area is haunted by a woman dressed in lavender or mauve coloured clothing. She is thought to be the woman who was responsible for closing down several local pubs at the start of the nineteenth century.


 
 


Whispering

Location: Shipton Oliffe - Frogmill Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940/50
Further Comments: Still considered haunted today, though to a much lesser degree, the inn was home to strange mist and whispering voices. Three ghostly card players once appeared to a guest in one of the rooms.


 
 


Hidden Treasure

Location: Slad - Area known as Pan's Wood (may no longer exist or has been renamed)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Accidents or sudden death is said to have prevented treasure hunters from finding the hoard hidden somewhere here. Even if people have come close to finding it, strange noises have caused them to flee.


 
 


Man in Black

Location: Sling - Gattles Cross (aka Gattles Stone), Clearwell Meend
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early - mid twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly man in black was seen close to this 1.5 metre tall stone.


 
 


Elizabeth Davis

Location: Sling - Miners Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth / early twenty first century
Further Comments: Formally known as Old Nell, this ghost had a name change after being identified as a landlady from the 1880s. She is described as friendly, and enjoys moving items around the building.


 
 


Hooded Figure

Location: Snowshill - Snowshill Arms, and priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Haunting both these locations, the figure is widely believed to be a monk. Its presence is believed to upset passing animals.


 
 


Footfalls of Charles

Location: Snowshill - Snowshill Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s onwards?
Further Comments: This building was donated to the National Trust in 1951 by Charles Wade; staff believe that the sounds coming from behind closed doors are those of the former owner, though some think that the haunting predates his death.


 
 


Ghostly Monk

Location: St Briavels - George Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Human inhabitants at the pub have learnt to share the building with the spirit of this former monk.
