Location: Market Harborough - Brown's Salon (former court house)

Further Comments: Caught on camera by the Ghost UK team, this 'orb' was caught appeared in the building at 20:21h. Staff have reported small items vanishing without trace, while one customer spotted two people dressed in old fashioned clothing standing by a fireplace.

Hooting Goblin

Location: Mickleton - Woods in the area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Recognised by his extremely loud call, normally heard around midnight, this fellow has never been seen.

Transparent Hound

Location: Minchinhampton - Area of Woefuldane Bottom, aka Woeful Danes' Bottom, aka Woeful Dane Bottom
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Likely nineteenth century
Further Comments: The phantom hound which stalks the road here is said to be semi-transparent. Phantom horsemen are also said to ride through the area.


Location: Minchinhampton - Barrow on common
Type: Legend

Further Comments: The barrow here was said to have contained a crock of gold.

Horse and Rider

Location: Minchinhampton - Devil's Churchyard (private land), east of parish
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom horse and rider are said to travel along the lane which runs alongside the Devil's Churchyard. When man and beast reach the stones, they vanish. The Churchyard was once covered in large stones, around which Christians decided to build a new church. Each night their work would be destroyed, so in the end they built the church somewhere else and pulled down the stones down out of spite.

The Long Stone

Location: Minchinhampton - Large stone along the Avening road

Further Comments: This large rock is said to walk around the field in which it stands at midnight, and occasionally wander to the spring at Minchinhampton to have a drink. Mothers were said to have passed their children through the gap in the stone to cure them of rickets or smallpox.

Top of the Hill

Location: Minchinhampton - St Bartholomew's Church
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Try as they might, the villagers could not build their church at the base of this hill - every night something pulled it down. The church was eventually constructed on top of the hill (an Iron Age settlement) without further problems.


Location: Moreton in Marsh - B4455
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 9 October 2005, 21:30h
Further Comments: A couple driving south on the Fosse Way witnessed the top half of a human figure run across the road in front of their car. The figure was light-grey in colour and appeared as a jacket only - no legs or head was visible. One witness said that the stance of the figure gave the appearance of a horse rider - although no horse could be seen.

Further Comments: This overly friendly phantom is said to distribute the occasion hug.


Location: Moreton in Marsh - Black Bear Inn

Further Comments: The noisy spirit that sometimes makes itself known here is nicknamed Fred.


Location: Moreton in Marsh - Fosse Way, near railway bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: An old fashioned motorcycle ridden by a helmetless biker is said to haunt this stretch of the Fosse Way.

Dame Creswyke

Location: Moreton in Marsh - Manor House Hotel (previously known as Creswyke House)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1987
Further Comments: Dame Creswyke is said to have been murdered in the house during the seventeenth century, and sometimes returns . Room 8 is said to be particularly haunted, although the last sighting of Creswyke in 1987 occurred just outside the building.

Further Comments: A ghostly woman, quick temperature drops and electrical appliances which switched themselves on were reported in the pub after a car crashed into the building.

White Figure Sitting

Location: Nailsworth - Roads east of area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Perched on a bench (it is unknown whether the chair is also spectral), the figure waits by the roadside.

Figures in White

Location: Naunton - B4068 near the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Woman in 1998, Monk in 2000
Further Comments: This area would appear to be quite haunted; the phantom woman with dark hair seen here vanished after waving to a driver, while a ghostly monk walked out in front of a car travelling at the speed limit - the figure passed straight through the vehicle. More reports exist of a car just losing power along the road, with the occupants claiming invisible water ran over their feet...

Woman in Sleeveless Dress

Location: Naunton - B4068 near town
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Summer 1998
Further Comments: A Doctor driving down this road pulled over to help a woman who waved his car down, but she vanished without trace as he climbed out of his vehicle. He searched the area but found nothing.

Smith on Horseback

Location: Nether Lypiatt (estate) - Nether Lypiatt Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 January (reoccurring)
Further Comments: An owner of the horse once hanged a blacksmith for failing to complete a piece of work within a tight time limit - the date of the death is marked by the appearance of a large white horse carrying the dead smith. Another report says that the ghost of the smith does not actually appear, but unlocks and opens the gates. A spirit in the house itself, that of a grey lady, has been seen several times, and there are unsubstantiated reports that it has been exorcised.

Further Comments: A phantom cavalier was spotted as he walked through the wall of a bedroom. The entity threw a cloak over his shoulder before disappearing.

Lisle's Soldiers

Location: North Nibley - Michael Wood and M5 motorway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: The site of the Battle of Nibley Green where the armies of Thomas Talbot (2nd Viscount Lisle) and William Berkeley (2nd Baron Berkeley) fought is said to be haunted. Lisle lost the battle, and local stories say his dead soldiers were buried in a mass grave in the woodland. It is also said that no birds sing in the woods. During the 1980s it was reported that a driver spotted ghostly soldiers fighting on the embankment.

Golden Coffin

Location: Notgrove - Long Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The long barrow was said to conceal a coffin made from gold. Nothing was found when the stones were exposed, and now the site has been (badly) covered up.

Dancing Women

Location: Nympsfield - Unknown hill in the area
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1973
Further Comments: A teenager standing on this hill looked down into a clearing in the woodland to see women in period costume. They appeared to be wearing very tall cone hats and dancing. The women vanished without warning.

Queen Margaret of Anjou

Location: Owlpen - Owlpen Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: Last seen by a group of children during World War 2, the wife of Henry VI is said to pine for her dead son Edward. More recently, poltergeist like effects and the sounds of phantom footsteps have been reported, as have the sounds of phantom children.

Ninety Nine Yews

Location: Painswick - Churchyard

Further Comments: Ninety nine yew trees stand in this churchyard. It is said that it is impossible to grow another yew tree in the churchyard, as the devil always comes and removes it. . .

Fawn Coloured Cat

Location: Podsmead - Widden Field
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2012
Further Comments: A witness spoke to the local newspaper about observing a fast moving, Alsatian-sized creature which was fawn in colour in a field close to her home. The witness said friends had seen a similar creature in the area.

The Black Abbot

Location: Prestbury - Church and churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Christmas and Easter (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Maintaining the same route every year, this ghost materialises in the church before crossing the churchyard and disappearing through a wall in the High Street. It was photographed in 1990 by a Mr Stafford.
