Further Comments: Evesham is said to have taken its name from a swineherd named Eoves. He had a vision of the Madonna and reported it to the Bishop of Worchester. The Bishop instructed a cathedral be constructed on the site, naming it 'Eoves Ham'.

Town Witches

Location: Fairford - Poulton Crossroads
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A small group of evil witches are said to have once plagued the town. After they died, they were buried at this crossroads, and their shades now haunt the area.


Location: Fairford - Private cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century?
Further Comments: The whispering voices of females were heard in the main bedroom, while the presence of a woman or girl would be felt around the stairs and the lower part of the building.

The Black Boy

Location: Forest of Dean - Littledean Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1984
Further Comments: The Black Boy was a servant of Charles Pyke - they were always considered to be as close as brothers, until the servant killed Pyke in 1744. Now the boy haunts the building, along with a ghostly cavalier, the sounds of screaming and heavy footfalls.

Knight in Shining Armour

Location: Forest of Dean - Saint Briavel's castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Woman seen 1998
Further Comments: Seen in the grounds and along corridors of this former castle (now a hostel) a figure in armour has been known to appear. It is not known if he is responsible for the disembodied footsteps along the walkways. A young child has been heard to cry in the King's Hall (where the bones of a baby were once found walled up), and finally a ghostly woman in white was spotted on the staircase in 1998.

Further Comments: A family living in the area reported hearing hammering and drilling sounds for several months from a disused pit close to their property. When finally investigated, the body of a man was discovered; a local stonemason nicknamed 'Get-it-to-Go' had disappeared around the time the hammering started, and although the body was in a bad state, it was identified as the missing man. The sounds stopped after the body was removed.

Further Comments: A massive wild boar was said to live in the forest, large enough to knock down trees. A group of farmers hunted the creature, but were unable to find the beast.

Motorbike & Sidecar

Location: Fossebridge - Roads around the area
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: August 1997
Further Comments: Three men in a car reported being followed by this aging vehicle, ridden by a man with no crash helmet. It suddenly vanished while close behind them.


Location: Gatcombe - Gatcombe Park
Type: Shuck

Further Comments: The large phantom dog reputed to haunt this royal household is named the 'Hound of Odin'.

Pot of Gold

Location: Gatcombe - Gatcombe Tump (long barrow)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman named Molly is said to have had a dream about finding gold at this location. The story ends either with Molly being struck by lightning as she lifts the stone, a ghost scaring her away, a ghost asking her husband to name five local churches (which he fails to do), or Molly recovering the gold.

Bangs in the Upper Area

Location: Gloucester - Ruins of Greyfriars
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: This spirit is blamed for the slamming of furniture which is heard upstairs.

Bleeding Friar

Location: Gloucester - Blackfriars Priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Seen running down a corridor with a serious head injury, it is not known if the friar died as a result of his wound. Another more common apparition is that of a monk, and he is also blamed for locking doors which are normally left open.

Sewing Fairies

Location: Gloucester - Exact location unknown, old tailor's shop
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The tailor who owned this shop left the mayor's clothing unfinished on Saturday and found it completed on the Monday morning. He used this event to advertise the shop, claiming that the little folk had done the work, though it soon transpired that an assistant had worked on the Sunday to avoid going to church.

Female Prisoner

Location: Gloucester - Prison (closed 2013)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to twenty-first century
Further Comments: This ghost is thought to be a woman who was held in the cells of the nearby abbey - she now appears in the jail and mocks the prisoners. Another story says she was killed by an inmate, and returns to continue her search for him. Activity is said to be particularly strong in cell 25 on the A3 landing.

Helping Hand

Location: Gloucester - Bishop's House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Guests donning their coats as they prepare to leave have felt someone give them a hand - but no one is there as they turn to give thanks.

Hooded Figure

Location: Gloucester - 120 Westgate Street (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ghost was said to stand in the back room of the building, scaring pets and other animals.


Location: Gloucester - Former school along Archdeacon Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The building is home to a former teacher who died after falling down a set of steps - he is seen dressed in a black gown and wearing a mortar cap.

Nun holding Child

Location: Gloucester - Former hospital along Tewkesbury Road (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The hospital was haunted by both the nun carrying a baby, and the sounds of the child crying. It is said that the woman committed suicide after blaming herself for the death of the infant.

Hunched Figure

Location: Gloucester - Dick Whittington's public house

Further Comments: A hunched figure seen walking around the cellar was just one of the ghosts which caused the owners of this public house to call in paranormal investigators. Lights have also been seen floating over the bar, while furniture moves itself around the building. Previously, a ghostly man wearing a flat cap caused workmen to flee the building.

Further Comments: Little is known about the shade which reputedly haunts this building.

Bloody Rain

Location: Gloucester - Skies over the town

Further Comments: On a day in February, it rained blood over the town.

Pallet Pusher

Location: Gloucester - Poundstretcher, Eastgate Street (was formally the Theatre Royal)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: A young woman hanged herself in this building when it was a theatre, and was said to haunt the location. In 2005, Poundstretcher's CCTV footage appeared to show a spectral figure of a Victorian woman pushing a whole pallet of goods to the ground.

Pale Little Girl

Location: Gloucester - Coach and Horses public house

Further Comments: A new landlord to the pub reported that he and his family had heard strange sounds, while his son had spotted a phantom little girl wearing white. The family were said to be too afraid to sleep upstairs.

Hostile Woman

Location: Gloucester - Private house along Tweenbrook Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970
Further Comments: A family were forced to move out from this property after several disturbing incidents involving the shade of a woman. A six year old boy was found by an open bedroom window (which had previously been nailed shut), saying 'the lady wants me to go with her', and the woman was also encountered under the entrance to the attic, asking 'pray for me'.


Location: Gloucester - Wickwar Brewing Company, Station Road

Further Comments: Staff at the company reported hearing phantom coughing and disembodied footsteps late at night in the brewing building.
