Stamping and Slamming Doors

Further Comments: After a 1940's suicide, this cinema gained a reputation as being haunted. The sound of stamping feet has been heard, and doors have opened and closed on their own accord. A few have reported seeing an old man dressed in a 1940's suit.


Little Old Men with Long Beards and Pointy Hats

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Jaywick's Frobisher Primary School, school field
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1982
Further Comments: Two girls watched a couple of fairy folk, described as looking like the average garden gnome, dig a hole in the school's playing field.


Owner of the Arm

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Beach between Clacton and Jaywick
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1986
Further Comments: A man reported that his dog uncovered a human arm along the beach. He took the arm home before taking the severed limb to the police station, and for several weeks afterwards, his house was plagued by loud bangs and rapping.


White Lady

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Wilson House, Leas Road (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid to late twentieth century
Further Comments: This figure was said to have been seen by several school girls when this building was a dorm. Sounds of heavy foots could also been heard walking along the corridors late at night.


Sounds of a Struggle

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Carr's Farm House, Coppins Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s?
Further Comments: The owners of this property reported several spooky occurrences, including phantom footsteps and muffled cries and the sounds of a struggle near the top of the staircase.


Singing

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Private house along St Osyth Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1975 - 1978
Further Comments: Until the building was exorcised in 1978, a family living here reported phantom singing, a little girl which all could hear but only their four year old son could see, and ghostly footsteps.


Moving Stock

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Old Lifeboat House
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A shopkeeper who hired a room to store surplus stock reported that items would rearrange themselves overnight.


Drowned Girl

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Baptist Church along Pier Avenue
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 1954
Further Comments: The sister of a bride was visible on several photographs, even though she had drowned a dozen years previous.


Young Girl

Location: Clacton-on-Sea - Private residence, Thornbury Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003
Further Comments: After a period of experiencing disembodied footsteps, doors opening and closing and electrical items switching themselves on and off, the occupier finally witnessed the manifestation of a young girl. Other incidents included the occupiers being dragged across the floor by their ankles and also the appearance of an old woman in the bed in the box room of the house.


Miss Holland Playing on the Piano

Location: Clavering - Moat Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Site of a murder in 1899, the spirit of the victim returns home once in a while and plays on the piano. Camille Holland has also been blamed for poltergeist activity in the area.


Monk with Lit Taper

Location: Coggeshall - Coggeshall Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This pallid wrinkled monk walks silently around the Abbey with a lit taper, before leaving and making its way along the old lanes towards the Blackwater river.


Robin the Woodcutter

Location: Coggeshall - Near Coggeshall Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1600s onwards
Further Comments: A local hero, Robin the Woodcutter's shade is said to walk the lands around the Abbey.


Presence, Opening Doors, Smell

Location: Coggeshall - 47 Church Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Once an inn, people in the building have reported doors that open and close without cause, odd smells, and a strange mist that crosses the base and top of the stairs.


White Monks

Location: Coggeshall - Cradle House, near Markshale Old Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Cradle House was once a haven for monks who held meetings in secret rooms within the building; it is believed that these figures sometimes return to dance in the garden.


Old Man

Location: Coggeshall - Guild House, Market End
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This little old man has reputedly materialised at the foot of a bed. Strange balls of light have been seen drifting around the attic, observed from an outside window.


James Parnell, Quaker Martyr

Location: Colchester - Colchester Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1656 onwards
Further Comments: Dying in captivity in 1656, Parnell was forced to climb a rope each time he wished to eat. He fell to his death in May of that year, and now haunts the dungeon. There is a story that a foolhardy man once stayed the night in the dungeons as a wager, only to emerge the following morning a gibbering wreak.


Alice Mellor

Location: Colchester - Red Lion Hotel, Lion Walk Shopping Precinct
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 1972
Further Comments: Killed in 1633, Mellor's ghost is said to have been so terrifying that her old room was sealed up and forgotten about. Now part of the hotel, no sightings have recently occurred, though the building is also home to a monk who died in a fire.


Living Old Woman

Location: Colchester - Colchester Hospital, Ward Eight
Type: Manifestation of the Living

Further Comments: The doppelganger of an old woman in bed was spotted within the hospital.


Dark Smiling Figure

Location: Colchester - St Botolph's Priory
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 1993
Further Comments: A young girl reported that while playing with her friends around the gravestones, she saw a dark figure by a tomb that smiled at her before disappearing into thin air.


Nurse in Old Fashioned Uniform

Location: Colchester - Military Hospital
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: World War II
Further Comments: A nurse wearing a Victorian uniform was seen by several people walking down a corridor, vanishing once she had reached the end. One of the patients was convinced that she had helped change his dirty bandages.


Soldier

Location: Colchester - Mill Street
Type: SHC
Date / Time: 19 February 1888
Further Comments: The body of a soldier was discovered in a hay loft, the majority of his corpse charred by fire, but the surrounding area untouched by the flames. His legs and boots were also undamaged.


Cavalier

Location: Colchester - East Street around Siege House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: The ghostly cavalier has been seen walking down East Street, disappearing when reaching Siege House. One of the rooms in the building is said to be so haunted that staff will only work there in pairs. A phantom puritan was also seen in the area.


Two Men Working on Flower Beds

Location: Colchester - Severalls Hospital (now closed)

Date / Time: 1960s (?)
Further Comments: Two gardeners reported seeing a couple of featureless characters working in the garden one rainy afternoon. The gardeners went to investigate, only to see the figures fade away.


Mysterious Noises

Location: Colchester - Hostel of the Good Shepherd, East Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s onwards
Further Comments: Footsteps and shuffling sounds have been heard coming from empty rooms in the hostel, and although an exorcism has been carried out at the sight, the sounds are still heard.


Black ABC

Location: Colchester - Mersea Road
Type: ABC
Date / Time: January 1996 - 1999
Further Comments: A large black cat was spotted along this Colchester road at different times by multiple witnesses.
