Sitting Man

Location: Gateshead - Golden Lion public house, Winlaton
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 12 December 2004
Further Comments: A photograph taken in this pub purports to show a strange man sitting in the background, slightly out of proportion to the rest of the environment. As the floor in the pub had just been raised, it has been suggested that this is the reason why the image looks slightly strange.


 
Anne Walker

Location: Great Lumley - Mill, Chester le Street (no longer standing)
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 1632 (or 1680)
Further Comments: The ghost of Anne, a local lass who had disappeared, appeared to a miller and threatened to haunt him unless he told the authorities of her murder. After she appeared a second time, he did so, and her killers were soon caught.


 
Grey Lady

Location: Greatham - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The village is said to be the haunt of a grey lady, though her history is unknown.


 
Footsteps

Location: Greatham - Social Club
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This club was once the haunt of disembodied footsteps, unidentified voices and other strange sounds.


 
Maid of Rokeby

Location: Greta Bridge - Waters where the two rivers meet
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This entity, dressed in white flowing clothes, patrols the banks of the river after dusk. A monk is also reported to do the same, having taken in own life in the river many years previous.


 
Home Wrecker

Location: Hartlepool - 18 Dorset Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A presence here was blamed when this family had to spend nights away from their home, after being scared off by the shape of a man's head by the windows.


 
Beowulf

Location: Hartlepool - Hart Village?
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A handful of scholars believe that the Danish built hall found by archaeologists in Hart village is Heorot, the mead hall that is defended by Beowulf from Grendel's attacks.


 
Girl in White

Location: Hartlepool - Private residence, A1049 area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003-2005
Further Comments: A property in this area was said to be haunted by a young girl in a white dress, seen by family members and at least one visitor.


 
Presence

Location: Horden - 4 Eden Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1994
Further Comments: After a failed exorcism, a family fled this property, in 1967, though they were reluctant to explain what they had encountered. More recently another family moved out after enduring cold spots and a feeling on depression which enveloped the building.


 
Woman in Black

Location: Houghton le Spring - Robbie Burns public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: One of three ghosts reportedly haunting this building, the woman in black was seen as she disappeared into a wall. A male shadow has been seen darting across the bar area, and finally, a young fair haired boy has also been spotted.


 
Hob Headless

Location: Hurworth-on-Teas - Road between village and Neasham
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Circa Nineteenth century
Further Comments: This brownie-related entity lived along this road until exorcised; cast under a stone where he had to remain for ninety-nine years and a day. Needless to say, this time has now expired but the entity appears quiet.


 
Fairy Royals

Location: Ireshope - Clint's Crags
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: The fairy royal family are supposed to live in a palace hidden here.


 
Venerable Bede's Chair

Location: Jarrow - St Paul's Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Newly wed brides who sit in this famous chair soon fall pregnant, according to local legend.


 
Raided Building

Location: Langley Park - Langley Hall (ruins)
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Over the past two hundred years, there have been several reports of this building seen to be on fire with soldiers running around its base - the vision vanishes if investigated. Another tale of the area tells of a headless coachman who drives a phantom coach.


 
Pony in a Pit

Location: Littleburn - Littleburn Colliery
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 31 December 1919
Further Comments: A worker on night shift reported seeing a phantom pony walking in the pit, which was grabbed by a disembodied arm - fifteen years previous to the night, a worker had been killed in the pit by a runaway pony.


 
Lost Child

Location: Middleton in Teeside - Tower Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It was at the nearby river that a woman once found a fairy child that she took home. The little creature, with red eyes, cried constantly, and wouldn't stop until returned to the place it was found. If your ear is placed by the ground, you can hear fairy music within the hill.


 
Pitchfork Hurlers

Location: Middridge - Middridge Grange and surrounding area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The fairies found here are full of mischief; the critters once chased a visitor to the village, who managed to seek shelter within the grange just before a pitchfork embedded itself in the door.


 
Woman with Child

Location: Neville's Cross - Lane in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: St Thomas' Eve (21 or 22 December) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The lane is home to a phantom woman who was murdered on the site. She is said to be sometimes accompanied by a strange looking child who possesses an oversized head.


 
Sounds of Battle

Location: Neville's Cross - Neville's Cross (ruins)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Circa nineteenth century
Further Comments: A local piece of folklore once said that whoever walked around the cross nine times before resting their head on the ground could hear the sounds of battle.


 
Lavender

Location: Neville's Cross - Unnamed private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1990s
Further Comments: It was reported that the presence of a Victorian woman who had killed her own baby was responsible for causing one woman to faint after smelling lavender. A child also present said that she felt hands on her shoulders which prevented her from moving.


 
Tall Man

Location: Newton Aycliffe - Private residence, Skipton Close
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: July 2013
Further Comments: The local press reported that Adam Maddison claimed his home was haunted by a tall man, spotted moving through the guest bedroom. The entity was blamed for slamming a door so hard that the hinges broke.


 
Mavis

Location: Old Cornsay - Black Horse public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Mavis is said to haunt the pub's cellar and the area in and around the toilets.


 
The Picktree Brag

Location: Pelton - Exact location unknown
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A goblin which enjoyed playing tricks on the locals, this creature would normally take the form of a farm animal before creating mischief.


 
Murdered Woman?

Location: Peterlee - Three bedroom council house, Basingstoke Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 2007 (actual exorcism on 27 December)
Further Comments: The council came in for criticism after agreeing to pay 50% of the fee of a medium who offered to exorcise this home. The owners believed it haunted, and the medium claimed to have made contact with a poltergeist called Peter who wanted to take over the tenant's young daughter.


 
Man in Gaiters

Location: Piercebridge - George Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ghostly gentleman wearing gaiters has been reported standing by an old clock in the hotel. The sound of two people in disagreement has been heard coming from the empty bar.
