Religious Procession

Location: Combe Martin - St Peter's Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1921
Further Comments: A mix of priests, women, peasants and a bishop were observed walking through the church in complete silence, before fading away.


 
 


Strangler

Location: Combeinteignhead - Coombe Cellars public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: A room that people reported feeling a presence in was later discovered to have been the scene of a murder, in which the victim had been strangled. A barmaid reported the sensation of being throttled after she spent a few nights in the room.


 
 


Monk

Location: Combeinteignhead - Oakford Holiday Flats (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1967
Further Comments: This witness reported waking up to see a grey monk standing at the foot of their bed, gazing out of a window.


 
 


Rustling Woman

Location: Cornwood - Fardel Hall (also called Fardell Hall), area between hall and nearby bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dressed in dark clothing, this feminine shade protects a hoard of buried treasure. The silk of the ghost's dress can normally be heard in the wind. One field in the area is said to be impossible to cultivate.


 
 


Cat or Seal?

Location: Croyde - Downend Point
Type: ABC
Date / Time: January 2009
Further Comments: When the decaying remains of a creature the size of a calf with large canine teeth washed up on the beach, many jumped to the conclusion it was the body of the Beast of Exmoor. Later analysis of the carcass suggested it was actually a seal.


 
 


Green Lady

Location: Cullompton - Bell Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The green lady is thought to be the mother of a former landlady, while the phantom gentleman also seen on the site is named as an old landlord.


 
 


US Airman

Location: Cullompton - King's Head public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This airman was stabbed to death in a fight at the pub, and has reportedly been seen post mortem.


 
 


Woman in Wedding Dress

Location: Cullompton - Manor House Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to frequent room 6, this bride was jilted at the altar, and still awaits her partner's return.


 
 


Angie

Location: Cullompton - White Hart public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Angie has been heard moving around the building, sometimes accompanied by the sounds of young children playing games.


 
 


Fresh Flowers on Grave

Location: Dartmoor - Road between Heatree Cross and Hound Tor
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1860 onwards
Further Comments: Like many nineteenth century suicides, Mary 'Kitty' Jay was buried at a crossroads. Fresh flowers are reported to be found at the grave, though no one has ever seen them placed. A floating female figure is also reported to have been seen by the graveside, as has a man draped in a dark blanket.


 
 


Calling Stones

Location: Dartmoor - Rowbrook, Broad Stones, River Dart
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is said that the Dart takes one life a year, by gently calling the victim's name until they fall into the waters and drown.


 
 


Unforgiven Women

Location: Dartmoor - Scorhill Circle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The largest stone circle on Dartmoor, it was said that 'sinful' women would pray for forgiveness at the foot of the stones - if God chose not to be lenient, a stone would fall upon them... Seven of the thirty stones have fallen, though no one can say for sure if bodies lay underneath.


 
 


Pixie

Location: Dartmoor - Shaugh Bridge area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1897
Further Comments: This wee fellow, standing 45 centimetres in height and wearing blue and red clothing, quickly vanished once he realised he had been spotted. The area is also said to be where the Devil and his hellhounds hunt.


 
 


Little People

Location: Dartmoor - Sheepstor - Pixies Cave
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The cave was shared with the pixies by humans when hiding during the Civil War.


 
 


Wool Delivery

Location: Dartmoor - Spinsters Rock
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: A burial cairn, it is said that these works were constructed by three passing spinsters who were en route to deliver a bundle of wool.


 
 


John Stephens

Location: Dartmoor - Stephens' Grave
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Buried at this remote spot after committing suicide, the shade of Stephens is skeletal and dressed in a decaying grey robe.


 
 


Galloping

Location: Dartmoor - Throwleigh
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Invisible creatures running along can be heard, and the wind of their passing felt.


 
 


The Devil does a Deal

Location: Dartmoor - Tunhill Kistvaen
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: 21 October 1631
Further Comments: It was at this spot that Jan Reynolds was approached by a cloaked stranger who bought his soul from him for seven years of good luck. He agreed, and seven years later the Devil came and took his due, while Jan sat in Widecombe church.


 
 


Cloven Hoof Stranger

Location: Dartmoor - Widecombe in the Moor
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: 1638
Further Comments: The Devil once appeared in the village, when a bolt of lightning came down from a stormy sky and started several fires. He had arrived to take the soul of Jan Reynolds, who had sold it to Old Nick several years previous. Jan and three others died in the church as it burnt.


 
 


Funeral

Location: Dartmoor - Wistman's Wood, one mile north of Two Bridges
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A possession of white clad figures where observed walking through the wood, following the path of what was once a well used funeral route.


 
 


Wish Hounds

Location: Dartmoor - Wistman's Wood, one mile north of Two Bridges
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Large black dogs are rumoured to hunt in this area of the moors - they once killed the son of a farmer.


 
 


Highwayman

Location: Dartmoor - Beetor Cross
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This cloaked figure has been known to stand by the cross, empty eye sockets watching the road ahead.


 
 


Luring Voice

Location: Dartmoor - Bradford Pool
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Calling your name gently, this soft voice will not stop until you are underwater, drowning.


 
 


Fighting

Location: Dartmoor - Cadover Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sound of battle can be heard near the bridge, the screams of the dying and injured, and the clash of sword and shield.


 
 


Guardian Monster

Location: Dartmoor - Chaw Gully
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Protecting a hoard of treasure, this beast has teamed up with a raven which calls out if anyone comes too close to the gold. The beast will then wait until a rope is lowered into the pit and then sever it when the treasure hunter is climbing down. The body would always be found outside the hole in the morning.
