White Blob

Location: Carlisle - Simply Food & Drinks, Durranhill Road, Botcherby
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 02 March 2010
Further Comments: Reported in local news, staff at this shop reported a white entity which could be seen on CCTV camera. The white shape entered and left the front door of the shop several times over an hour, unnerving the staff, although the 'entity' is more likely to have been an insect close to the lens or light flare.


 
 


Horace Wimpole

Location: Carlisle - Woodland near Heatherleigh Hall
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: A former owner of the property wrote that he saw the ghost of Horace riding on a black horse several times, always just prior to the death of a loved one.


 
 


Scot's Building

Location: Carrock Fell - Stones on top of the fell
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The site of an Iron Age hill fort, the rocky remains were once said to have been constructed by local wizard Michael Scot. Some legends replace the builder with the Devil.


 
 


Man in Tall Hat

Location: Cartmel - Priory Gatehouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure has been observed standing in the grounds, disappearing if spoken to. Monks are also reported to haunt the area, named as those who have died trying to help people lost and stuck in the nearby sands.


 
 


Woman who Calls

Location: Cartmel Fell - North of area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This woman's lover, a charcoal burner, was struck by lightning and died. She slowly pinned away, and now can be heard calling out for her partner.


 
 


Caller of Claife

Location: Claife - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but said to appear at dusk
Further Comments: A phantom figure would often be heard shouting across the lake, causing fear to all those who heard the sounds. One man foolish enough to investigate was found petrified, and he died within 24 hours. Even though the entity was exorcised by a monk, the hooded figure is still said to appear silent by the water's edge. A phantom boat is also said to traverse this area on Windermere.


 
 


Friar

Location: Clappersgate - Grey Friars Lodge hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom friar has been spotted walking down nearby lanes. The hotel itself is reportedly haunted by a bishop; an old thin man dressed in purple, he sits in the dinning room.


 
 


Hidden Fairies

Location: Cockermouth - Castle How - hillfort
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Children digging in the area were said to have unearthed a small fairy house - it later vanished, along with their digging equipment, though two small figures were observed in the area for several days afterwards.


 
 


Woman in Blue

Location: Cockermouth - Isel Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The phantom woman wearing a blue silk dress only appears to men in a particular bedroom. The entity sits on the end of the bed, waking the occupier.


 
 


Grey Lady

Location: Cockermouth - Lorton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Between 5 - 7.30 in the morning
Further Comments: The rustling of a dress have been reported in the early hours of the morning, believed to belong to the lady dressed in grey, who has been seen in the building. She has been identified as Elizabeth, the disabled daughter of the Bragg family who resided here.


 
 


Treasure Guardian

Location: Cockermouth - Tallentire
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A decapitated female ghost was reported to stand guard over a hidden hoard of gold near the tower of this building.


 
 


Simon

Location: Coniston - Simon's Nick rock face
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Simon was shown a secret seam of copper by fairies - he mined it, but bad luck followed - he was blown up when a keg of gunpowder exploded. Simon's shade is said to hang around the rock face that now bares his name.


 
 


Radiant Boy

Location: Corby - Corby Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1800s onwards
Further Comments: Appearing early in the morning, this ghostly child has golden hair and glows like an angel. Some believe that those who see him are blessed with wealth and power but also cursed with a violent death. Drumming is also said to be occasionally heard; some speculate this to be created by the radiant boy.


 
 


Peg Sneddle

Location: Crackenthorpe - General area
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: September (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Peg Sneddle, or Elizabeth Sleddall as she was known in life, would manifest prior to a death in the Machell family (she was married to a Machell, but used her maiden name after his premature death). This ceased when her body was hidden under a large rock in the nearby river, though it would reappear every year in September. A phantom coach and four also haunts the same area.


 
 


Vampire

Location: Croglin - Croglin Low Hall
Type: Vampire
Date / Time: 1875
Further Comments: One of the few vampire reports in the UK, this creature attacked a young girl in this building. One of her brothers saw the attack, and shot the monster in the leg. The blood trail enabled them to track it to the village graveyard, where it was dug up and burnt.


 
 


Moved Stones

Location: Crosby Garrett - Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Church still present
Further Comments: The church was ready to be erected at the top of the valley; the heavy stones ready for construction. Just before the building work commenced, all the building material was moved to where the church now stands (the villagers did not dare move them back).


 
 


The Grave

Location: Crosby Ravensworth - Cairn on the fell
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: A cairn here has been named as a likely burial place of Robin Hood.


 
 


Treasure Sharer

Location: Crosby Ravensworth - Crosby Hall
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The entity that took up temporary residence at this building told the owner (or a farmer, depending on the story's source) where to find a hidden hoard of treasure and details of his death, before disappearing forever.


 
 


Grey Figure

Location: Crosby Ravensworth - Unnamed stone circle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: A phantom grey figure has been seen to emerge from a nearby wooded area and vanish when reaching the stones.


 
 


Evil Spirits

Location: Cross Fell - General area
Type: legend
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: It is debated whether Cross Fell is named after the angry (or cross) spirits that haunt it, or after a cross that legend says St Augustine erected to rid the area of the spirits.


 
 


Witch Haunt

Location: Cumrew - Dunwalloght Castle (no longer standing)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: The area where this castle once stood was so haunted that locals believed witches would periodically meet there.


 
 


We Three Kings

Location: Dacre - Dacre Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: These three figures return once in a while, re-enacting a scene that happened in the dark ages when they first met to discuss the Norse threat. Another phantom reported here is Lady Dacre - she was walled up alive with her dead lover after her husband discovered her illicit affair. Her phantom sobs and screams can now be heard.


 
 


Lantern Bearer

Location: Dacre - Hawkesdale Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Having hanged himself in the hall, this young lad holding a lantern appears on Halloween and walks towards the nearby river Caldew, vanishing into its cold waters.


 
 


Fred

Location: Dacre - Horse and Ferrier public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: A mischievous entity nicknamed Fred has taken up residence in this pub.


 
 


Giggling

Location: Dalston - Dalston Hall inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Room twelve is said to be haunted by giggling and whispering, while room four is home to a phantom maid who took her own life. In addition, barrels have been heard rolling in the basement (unaided by mortal hand) and a man in Victorian clothing spotted around the grounds.
