Sir John Radcliffe

Further Comments: A sixteenth century owner of the building, Sir John is said to be only one of fourteen entities which have been reported on site, including a lady dressed in a beekeeper's outfit.

Monk

Location: Sandbach - Private house along Park Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1930s onwards
Further Comments: This phantom monk was said to have manifested to Christmas Carollers during the 1930s, and although not malevolent, continues to wake people who sleep in the house. The figure is said to wear shoes which curl upwards at the toe.

Scots

Location: Sandbach - Scotch Common

Further Comments: A battle occurred here between Scots and locals in 1651 - the shades of the defeated Scottish troops are reported to be still at unrest.

Boots

Location: Sandbach - Territorial Army Drill Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1965
Further Comments: A large door would be heard closing itself, while others reported the sound of heavy boots coming from the empty hall. It was reported that locals believed the sounds to be created by the ghost of a sergeant who had died some time previous.

Traffic Deadlock

Location: Shocklach - Area around the church

Further Comments: Once a year, the Brereton family return from the grave to rendezvous at this church - their phantom coaches are reported to create tailbacks!

Moving Island

Location: Siddington - Redesmere Lake
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: A knight was convinced that his girlfriend was seeing another man and told her he would never see her again until the island in the lake moved - it promptly started drifting and has done so ever since.

Floating Bowl

Location: Smallwood - Private residence
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: A former occupier of this property reported witnessing mild polt-like effects while here, including a bowl floating in mid-air, the pulling of hair, and sounds of crashing plates in the kitchen.

Headless Kidnapper

Location: Spurstow - Dead Man's Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A member of the Spurstow family was beheaded as a kidnap attempt that he had masterminded went wrong. His headless shade now walks along the road that the body was taken.

Former Workers

Location: Styal - Quarry Bank Mill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The National Trust named the mill in their top ten most haunted locations, claiming a gang of former workers were still residing there.

Old Man Marriott

Location: Sutton Lane End - Rossendale wood (known locally as Marriott`s Wood)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, said to occur around midnight
Further Comments: A ghostly figure of Old Man Marriott is said to walk down the road with his sheep dog and his gun.

Elizabeth

Location: Sweattenham - Sweattenham Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer 2013
Further Comments: A visitor sitting with their back to an alcove spotted something black behind them. Expecting to see someone standing there, the visitor turned around, but there was nothing there. A member of staff told the visitor that the site was once a nunnery and that the pub was haunted by a nun by the name of Elizabeth.


A headless ghost.

Cromwellian Victim

Location: Tarvin - Bridle path near The Headless Woman inn, running from Hockenhull Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: An old servant woman was decapitated by agents of Cromwell, after she refused to hand over the location of her master's fortune. The woman's ghost made so many appearances that they named the nearby public house after the entity.

Aging Woman

Location: Thurstaston - Thurstaston Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The artist Reginald Easton reported waking during the night and seeing an old woman standing by his bed when he spent a night at the hall. He was so impressed he spent a further week at the hall, drawing the ghost when he saw it. She is believed to have murdered a child in the hall.


Toft's phantom older lady.

Old Woman

Further Comments: The shade of an old woman is reported to sit under this group of trees.


The ghost duck of Tushingham.

Pet Duck

Location: Tushingham - Blue Bell Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This tame bird was killed by a landlord after it took to attacking patrons. Unfortunately, death failed to prevent the ankle pecker continuing its work, and it fell on members of the clergy to exorcise the spirit.


A strange blackbird.

Trapped in a Bird

Location: Utkinton - Utkinton Hall
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Sixteenth century
Further Comments: A priest called in to deal with a troublesome spirit managed to trapped it within the body of a blackbird. It is said that all the blackbirds on the grounds of the hall today are descended from that particular bird.

Mr McGraw

Location: Wallasey - Oldershaw Grammar School
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: Dressed in his headmaster's gown, this figure has been both seen and heard on different occasions - when seen by a cleaner, she convinced the caretaker to arm himself with a pistol and search the area!

Man with Slick White Hair

Location: Warrington - A50 leading to Warrington from Knutford
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: May 1995
Further Comments: A driver speeding down the A50 passed a man in the road who tried to flag him down. The figure, with slicked back white hair, wore black clothing. The driver decided to go back and help the man, stopping about a kilometre further along the road, but to his horror realised the man was now standing a couple of metres behind his car - it would have been impossible for the figure to catch up with the vehicle in such a short period of time. The driver drove off again, not wanting to engage with the man with the white hair.

Murder Victim

Location: Warrington - Bewsey Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: His life snuffed out at some point in the 1930s, this shade has remained earthbound since. The hall may also be haunted by a white Lady, thought to be Lady Isabella le Botelor.

Giles

Location: Warrington - Black Horse Inn (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One story says that the area around the inn is haunted by a stumbling and/or crawling figure who vanishes when approached. Some name him as Giles Boston, mortally injured during a fight with Royalist troops.

Grey Lady

Location: Warrington - Hollins Park House (aka Winwick Hall, former hospital)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-2005?
Further Comments: This part of the old hospital site was said to be haunted by a grey lady and the sounds of children running and shouting. Other parts of the hospital, since demolished and replaced with a housing estate, were home to a phantom nun reputed to walk into one room here and take a seat before disappearing. She was said to be only visible from the knees up. Other phantoms included an American GI, white ladies, and former members of staff.

Stone Throwing

Location: Warrington - Houses close to the churchyard, Stockton Heath
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1885
Further Comments: Several greenhouses had glass broken after paving stones were dropped upon them. Despite sentries being posted, the source of the stones could not be found.

Dick Peabody

Location: Warrington - Lower Angel tavern
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghostly figure is blamed whenever a member of staff has their bottom pinched...

Tearaway Kids

Location: Warrington - Marsh House Lane, private house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: A ghostbuster claimed to have rid this house of a total of five spirits, all teenagers or younger, who were making the homeowners life a living hell.

Heptagon

Location: Warrington - Skies over the area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 11 April 2019
Further Comments: From their back garden, a witness watched a dark grey heptagon shape silently fly over their house.
