Scarlet Rider

Location: Stockport - Bramall (also known as Bramhall) Hall

Further Comments: This figure on horseback, dressed in an unmistakable red, appears once a year - in 1630 he is said to have taken the life of the owner of the hall.


Location: Stockport - Dukinfield Chapel
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1646
Further Comments: During a service in the chapel, an invisible entity moved around the church, drumming so loud the sound drove all the congregation away.


Location: Stockport - Gardener's Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A former member of staff claimed the pub's cellar was haunted by a ghost named John - failure to say 'good morning' to the ghost would result in him wolf whistling in your ear. The phantom would also object it the cellar was rearranged and would move things around and turn taps on.

Glowing Lady

Location: Stockport - St Thomas's Hospital
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This radiant woman appears dressed as either a nurse or a nun, and always just before the death of a patient on a certain ward.


Location: Stockport - Star and Garter public house and surrounding area

Further Comments: A young boy who was murdered nearby in 1861, George is still said to play with living children.

Figure in Hat

Location: Stockport - Stockport Grammar School, Victorian convent house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1964 and onwards
Further Comments: A group photograph taken at the school in 1964 shows a figure in a hat standing at the rear of the group, at an angle otherwise impossible to be caught on film. Witnesses say that the convent house is haunted by footsteps coming from empty parts of the building.

Further Comments: Lurking in the cellar, this female shade is said to horrify anyone who encounter her. Another ghost, Doctor James Briscall, is said to sit at the bar - the doctor set the building up as the town's first infirmary.

Back Slapper

Location: Stockport - White Lion public house
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: A DJ reported feeling someone slap his back and head, although there was no one close by. Reporting it to the landlady, he was told that other DJs had told her similar stories.

Former Workers

Location: Styal - Quarry Bank Mill

Further Comments: The National Trust named the mill in their top ten most haunted locations, claiming a gang of former workers were still residing there.

Old Man Marriott

Location: Sutton Lane End - Rossendale wood (known locally as Marriott`s Wood)

Date / Time: Unknown, said to occur around midnight
Further Comments: A ghostly figure of Old Man Marriott is said to walk down the road with his sheep dog and his gun.

Cromwellian Victim

Location: Tarvin - Bridal path near The Headless Woman inn, running from Hockenhull Hall

Further Comments: This old servant woman was decapitated by agents of Cromwell, after she refused to betray her master's fortune to them. She was once seen so often, they named a public house after her!

Aging Woman

Location: Thurstaston - Thurstaston Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The artist Reginald Easton reported waking during the night and seeing an old woman standing by his bed when he spent a night at the hall. He was so impressed he spent a further week at the hall, drawing the ghost when he saw it. She is believed to have murdered a child in the hall.

Old Woman

Location: Toft - Seven Sisters

Further Comments: The shade of an old woman is reported to sit under this group of trees.

Pet Duck

Location: Tushingham - Blue Bell Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This tame bird was killed by a landlord after it took to attacking patrons. Unfortunately, death failed to prevent the ankle pecker continuing its work, and it fell on members of the clergy to exorcise the spirit.

Trapped in a Bird

Location: Utkinton - Utkinton Hall
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Sixteenth century
Further Comments: A priest who was called in to deal with a troublesome spirit trapped it within the body of a blackbird. It is said that all the blackbirds on the grounds of the hall today are descended from that particular bird.

Mr McGraw

Location: Wallasey - Oldershaw Grammar School
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: Dressed in his headmaster's gown, this figure has been both seen and heard on different occasions - when seen by a cleaner, she convinced the caretaker to arm himself with a pistol and search the area!

Man with Slick White Hair

Location: Warrington - A50 leading to Warrington from Knutford
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: May 1995
Further Comments: A driver speeding down the A50 passed a man in the road who was trying to flag him down. The figure had slicked back white hair, and wore black clothing. The driver decided to go back and help the man, stopping about a kilometre further along the road, but to his horror realised the man was now standing a couple of metres behind his car - it would have been impossible for the figure to catch up with the vehicle in such a short period of time. The driver drove off again, not wanting to engage with the man with the white hair.

Murder Victim

Location: Warrington - Bewsey Old Hall

Further Comments: His life snuffed out at some point in the 1930s, this shade has remained earthbound since. The hall may also be haunted by a white Lady, thought to be Lady Isabella le Botelor.


Location: Warrington - Black Horse Inn

Further Comments: One story says that the area around the inn is haunted by a stumbling and / or crawling figure who vanishes when approached. Some name him as Giles Boston, mortally injured during a fight with Royalist troops.

Grey Lady

Location: Warrington - Hollins Park House (aka Winwick Hall, former hospital)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 2005?
Further Comments: This part of the old hospital site was said to be haunted by a grey lady and the sounds of children running and shouting. Other parts of the hospital, since demolished and replaced with an housing estate, were home to a phantom nun reputed to walk into one room here and take a seat before disappearing. She was said to be only visible from the knees up. Other phantoms included an American GI, white ladies, and former members of staff.

Stone Throwing

Location: Warrington - Houses close to the churchyard, Stockton Heath

Further Comments: A number of greenhouses had glass broken after paving stones were dropped upon them. Despite sentries being posted, the source of the stones could not be found.

Dick Peabody

Location: Warrington - Lower Angel tavern
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghostly figure is blamed whenever a member of staff has their bottom pinched...

Tearaway Kids

Location: Warrington - Marsh House Lane, private house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: A ghostbuster claimed to have rid this house of a total of five spirits, all teenagers or younger, who were making the home owners life a living hell.

Banging Door

Location: Warrington - Walton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: June 1915
Further Comments: A young married couple reported being woken by their bedroom door being thrown open by an invisible entity, and slammed shut a few seconds later. They were later told an old woman was supposed to haunt their bedroom.


Location: Widnes - Asda store, Hale Road

Date / Time: 1990s?
Further Comments: Fortean TV reported this superstore as possessing ghosts in its EPOS room and bakery.
