Further Comments: The church once stood in the middle of the village, but the Devil tried to run off with it. He dropped the building where it currently stands when he heard the ringing of the bells at a nearby abbey.

Old Lady in Red

Location: Parkgate - Quay House

Further Comments: This old woman often appeared wearing a large red cape, walking across one of the rooms before taking a seat and waiting for an unknown event.

Dueller and Wife

Location: Plumley - Tabley Old Hall

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghostly male figure was killed after a fight, his wife taking her own life in grief. Both figures stand together on the balcony.

Figure in Blue

Location: Poynton - Middlewood Station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 14 February 1995, around 18:15h
Further Comments: The only person waiting at the station watched as a figure in blue cross the platform and down onto the tracks, where it appeared to lay on the tracks, disappearing from view. The witness walked to the platform edge and looked for the figure, but no one could be seen. The story was later told to another person, who said the figure had been previously seen.

Further Comments: Newly married couples avoided passing through the Lychgate as it was believed the marriage would fail, either by discontent or death.

Further Comments: Her reasons unknown, this mermaid returns once a year to ring a bell hidden deep underwater and sing.

Musket Fire

Further Comments: Belonging to Civil War soldiers, the exchange of small arms fire still echoes around the area where a battle once raged. The sound of a crying child has also been reported at night.

Big Man

Location: Runcorn - 1 Byron Street

Further Comments: A ghostly figure seven foot tall has been seen at the farm. A number of poltergeist-like effects were also felt here, including many household items being found broken, banging, and tables violently shaking without anyone near.

Further Comments: A trespasser on the site claimed to hear beautiful singing while on the site, as well as seeing a couple of glowing monks.

Cattle Eaters

Location: Runcorn - General area

Further Comments: Before the town was built here, legend says the area was home to a huge fire breathing dragon that was slain by a local blacksmith annoyed at the amount of cattle he and his friends were losing.


Location: Runcorn - Town Park area and a location close to the Royal British Legion

Further Comments: On two occasions witnesses claimed that a figure dressed all in black with red glowing eyes had prevented crime. The first instance the figure had prevented a motorbike theft, and in the second had taken on a gang of six young people, disarming them before disappearing into the night.

Sir John Radcliffe

Further Comments: A sixteenth century owner of the building, Sir John is said to be only one of fourteen entities which have been reported on site, including a lady dressed in a beekeeper's outfit.

Further Comments: A battle occurred here between Scots and locals in 1651 - the shades of the defeated Scottish troops are reported to be still at unrest.

Further Comments: The only thing known about this spooky entity is that is named only 'You'.


Location: Sandbach - Private house along Park Lane

Further Comments: This phantom monk was said to have manifested to Christmas Carollers during the 1930s, and although not malevolent, continues to wake people who sleep in the house. The figure is said to wear shoes which curl upwards at the toe.

Further Comments: A large door would be heard closing itself, while others reported the sound of heavy boots coming from the empty hall. It was reported that locals believed the sounds to be created by the ghost of a sergeant who had died some time previous.

Further Comments: Once a year, the Brereton family return from the grave to rendezvous at this church - their phantom coaches are reported to create tailbacks!

Moving Island

Location: Siddington - Redes Lake

Further Comments: A knight was convinced that his girlfriend was seeing another man, and told her he would never see her again until the island in the lake moved - it promptly started drifting, and has done so ever since.

Floating Bowl

Location: Smallwood - Private residence

Further Comments: A former occupier of this property reported witnessing mild polt-like effects while here, including a bowl floating in mid air, the pulling of hair, and sounds of crashing plates in the kitchen.

Headless Kidnapper

Location: Spurstow - Dead Man's Lane

Further Comments: A member of the Spurstow family was beheaded as a kidnap attempt that he had masterminded went wrong. His headless shade now walks along the road that the body was taken.

Glowing Lady

Location: Stockport - St Thomas's Hospital

Further Comments: This radiant woman appears dressed as either a nurse or a nun, and always just before the death of a patient on a certain ward.

Scarlet Rider

Location: Stockport - Bramall (also known as Bramhall) Hall

Date / Time: 31 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This figure on horseback, dressed in an unmistakable red, appears once a year - in 1630 he is said to have taken the life of the owner of the hall.


Location: Stockport - Dukinfield Chapel

Further Comments: During a service in the chapel, an invisible entity moved around the church, drumming so loud the sound drove all the congregation away.

Figure in Hat

Location: Stockport - Stockport Grammar School, Victorian convent house

Date / Time: 1964 and onwards
Further Comments: A group photograph taken at the school in 1964 shows a figure in a hat standing at the rear of the group, at an angle otherwise impossible to be caught on film. Witnesses say that the convent house is haunted by footsteps coming from empty parts of the building.

Further Comments: A young boy who was murdered nearby in 1861, George is still said to play with living children.
