Further Comments: After staff reported hearing children's ghostly laughter, the Shadow Seekers paranormal team were called in. Members of the group claimed to have used dowsing rods to determine that the spirits of four children remained in the mill - Caroline, Sarah, Rebecca and John.

White Dog

Further Comments: Departing the station, this train driver reported seeing a white misty dog move quickly across the track from left to right. One side of the railway stands a six metre high wall, while on the other a 3.5 metre high mesh fence - nowhere where the dog could have come from or disappeared to.

Headless King Charles

Further Comments: The headless ghost of King Charles has been seen here, though he never visited the place. The nearby river Goyt is haunted by a wailing woman who once lived at the hall - her lover was drowned in the river, and she waits and cries near the spot.

Further Comments: This noisy member of the building sings, walks around the upper part of the floor, slams doors, and sometimes locks the bathroom door, just for fun.

Further Comments: A local story tells of how Sir Thomas Venables shot and killed a dragon here by shooting an arrow into the eye, just as it picked up a small child to eat.

Sister Ida

Further Comments: Sister Ida's shade was thought to come back to bring attention to the suspicious death of the abbess. An unnamed road leading to the abbey is haunted by a decapitated head that rolls on the floor - this belonged to a monk who was murdered while taking a message to the building.

Further Comments: This house has a salamander carved into the wall to protect it from fire. It appears to have worked, as a large blaze in the community in 1583 levelled most of the town, but failed to touch the protected home.

Further Comments: A former owner of the hotel killed himself with a shotgun after discovering his wife was having an affair. His ghost was blamed for ringing bells in the kitchen after it had been closed for the night.

Grey Lady

Further Comments: This phantom lady is reputed to walk the corridors of the hotel leaving the scent of flowers as she passes. Her portrait hangs in the drawing room. Another phantom is that of a young lad who cries over his missing dog (the grave of which is close to the walled garden).

Further Comments: A local myth tells of a young girl named Stephanie died in a fire (or a car crash, or run over by a steamroller, depending on the story); her ghost returned to the school and could be heard screaming 'Mummy, mummy, nooo..!'

Further Comments: A mother called in a clairvoyant after she heard a man's voice whispering over her baby's intercom. The house had been reported as haunted by its previous occupiers, by an old man named Jack who had died there.

Further Comments: The church once stood in the middle of the village, but the Devil tried to run off with it. He dropped the building where it currently stands when he heard the ringing of the bells at a nearby abbey.

Further Comments: Before the town was built here, legend says the area was home to a huge fire breathing dragon that was slain by a local blacksmith annoyed at the amount of cattle he and his friends were losing.

Further Comments: A trespasser on the site claimed to hear beautiful singing while on the site, as well as seeing a couple of glowing monks.

Further Comments: On two occasions witnesses claimed that a figure dressed all in black with red glowing eyes had prevented crime. The first instance the figure had prevented a motorbike theft, and in the second had taken on a gang of six young people, disarming them before disappearing into the night.
