White HGV

Location: Knutsford - M6 near the town

Further Comments: A driver was terrified as a glowing white lorry charged towards him travelling the wrong way down the M6. He pulled onto the hard shoulder and closed his eyes, feeling the HGV drive past - but looking into his rear view mirror immediately after, there was nothing there.

Edward Higgins

Location: Knutsford - Royal George Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A former robber and burglar, Higgins was caught, killed and now haunts the hotel where he made his base of operations. A phantom coach has been seen and heard moving over cobbles outside the building.


Location: Knutsford - Tatton Mile (road running next to Tatton Park)

Date / Time: 19 October 2009, approximately 22:30h
Further Comments: Driving with his full beams on, this driver spotted the figure of a man standing in the road with his hand out, as if he wanted the car to stop. As the car drew closer, the figure vanished, causing the driver to swerve out of shock.

Further Comments: Thoughtfully nicknamed by staff and visitors, this old lady was seen in the pub.

Small Man

Location: Lymm - Statham Lodge hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: More likely to be a distant folk memory than a true ghost story, the attic of this building was said to be haunted by a little man. In truth, James Wilson (a very short man) lived in the attic in the early nineteenth century, most likely to escape mockery, and after his death, his desire for privacy lived on in the minds of his neighbours.

Richard and Friends

Location: Macclesfield - Bate Hall public house

Further Comments: Landlord Sean Hutchinson claimed in the local press that fourteen entities haunt this pub, including Richard, a little boy who plays hide and seek, a grey lady, and something which likes to scream.

Severed Arm

Location: Macclesfield - Capesthrone Hall

Further Comments: This ethereal limb has been seen trying to open a window in the premises! An assemblage of shadows has also been seen, lurking near the family vault, while a female form dressed in grey drifts around the ground floor.

Wish Steps

Location: Macclesfield - Church of St Michael and All Angels

Further Comments: Local legend says that if you can run up the cobbled steps in one breath you will receive anything you wish for.

Female in Old Attire

Location: Macclesfield - Gawsworth Hall and general area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Autumn (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This female form is reported to drift around the courtyard of this hall, and has also been reported patrolling nearby lanes and in the churchyard. Some have named her as Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth I.

White Woman

Location: Macclesfield - Kendel Road (area known locally as the Birdy)

Further Comments: This area is reputed to be haunted by a white woman with no feet.

White Figure

Location: Macclesfield - Large, private house near churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1958
Further Comments: A family moved out of their home after seeing a white figure with a grotesque face in one of the rooms - the two witnesses knocked a door from its hinges while trying to escape the entity.


Location: Macclesfield - Maggoty's Wood

Further Comments: A figure has been reported dancing about the woods, their clothing adjourned with bells. The grave of the last 'real' jester in England is housed in this wooded area, and it is believed that the shade is he.

Caroline and Friends

Location: Macclesfield - Paradise Mill, Silk Museum
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 2002, 31 October 2007
Further Comments: In 2002, a worker at the museum encountered several ghostly children on the site, one of which followed her home. The ghosts were described as non-threatening. The Shadow Seekers paranormal team were called in 2007, and claimed to have used dowsing rods to determine that the spirits of four children remained in the mill - Caroline, Sarah, Rebecca and John.

White Dog

Location: Macclesfield - South of railway station

Further Comments: Departing the station, this train driver reported seeing a white misty dog move quickly across the track from left to right. One side of the railway stands a six metre high wall, while on the other a 3.5 metre high mesh fence - nowhere where the dog could have come from or disappeared to.

Further Comments: This pub spirit is heard walking around at night, opening and closing doors.

Headless King Charles

Location: Marple - Marple Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The headless ghost of King Charles has been seen here, though he never visited the place. The nearby river Goyt is haunted by a wailing woman who once lived at the hall - her lover was drowned in the river, and she waits and cries near the spot.


Location: Middlewich - Chadwick Fields (adult day care centre), Coronation Road

Further Comments: This noisy member of the building sings, walks around the upper part of the floor, slams doors, and sometimes locks the bathroom door, just for fun.

Slain Dragon

Location: Moston - Exact location unknown
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local story tells of how Sir Thomas Venables shot and killed a dragon here by shooting an arrow into the eye, just as it picked up a small child to eat.

Sister Ida

Location: Moulton - Vale Royal Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Sister Ida's shade was thought to come back to bring attention to the suspicious death of the abbess. An unnamed road leading to the abbey is haunted by a decapitated head that rolls on the floor - this belonged to a monk who was murdered while taking a message to the building.

Fire Protection

Location: Nantwich - Churche's Mansion

Further Comments: This house has a salamander carved into the wall to protect it from fire. It appears to have worked, as a large blaze in the community in 1583 levelled most of the town, but failed to touch the protected home.

Former Owner

Location: Nantwich - Lamb Hotel (now closed)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A former owner of the hotel killed himself with a shotgun after discovering his wife was having an affair. His ghost was blamed for ringing bells in the kitchen after it had been closed for the night.

Grey Lady

Location: Nantwich - Rookery Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom lady is reputed to walk the corridors of the hotel leaving the scent of flowers as she passes. Her portrait hangs in the drawing room. Another phantom is that of a young lad who cries over his missing dog (the grave of which is close to the walled garden).

Further Comments: An unknown priest once arrived here and gave mass before mysteriously vanishing. It was later discovered that his description matched that of a former priest who was buried in the churchyard.

Black Hound

Location: Neston - General area

Further Comments: To see this huge black dog is normally a sign of ill fortune.

Sir Gaulter and Lady Friend

Location: Northenden - Area near the Mersea
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Stormy Nights
Further Comments: These two figures reportedly haunt the shore line of the Mersea.
