Grey Lady on Staircase

Location: Cambridge - Girton College, Taylor Knob Staircase
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1800s
Further Comments: The Grey Lady was seen in the late 19th century, and hasn't been seen since. She is rumoured to be Miss Taylor, a young girl who died before starting Girton. The college was also briefly home to a Roman Centurion when first built, though little has been heard from this soldier since.


 
Young Boy

Location: Cambridge - Private residence, Petersfield area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 2014
Further Comments: A residence who started seeing a young boy in mid-twentieth century clothing researched her neighbourhood and found ten people, including children, died in a bombing accident.


 
Second World War Pilot

Location: Cambridge - Cambridge Airport
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A number of buildings on this site have reports of phantom pilots in their flying gear or RAF uniforms. Sounds of footsteps in empty areas are not uncommon, and there is also a story of ghostly singing.


 
Mr Round

Location: Cambridge - Christ's College, Mulberry Tree in Garden
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight on nights of the full moon
Further Comments: A tall, elderly gentleman wearing a beaver hat, Round is said to have murdered the only doctor who had the skill to save his dying girlfriend - thus his ghost walks the grounds in the area around the mulberry tree in regret.


 
A Nun and Brown Dog-Thing

Location: Cambridge - Abbey Road, Abbey House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth and twentieth century
Further Comments: Exorcised at the turn of the last century, Abbey House was said to be the former home for a poltergeist, the echoes of chains, a butler, a woman in white, a squirrel, and a hare. However, the sightings of a grey lady in the 60's may prove reports of the success of the exorcism premature.


 
Barrett

Location: Cambridge - King's College, The Gibbs Building
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: One story says that Barrett was a strange fellow who stored a coffin in his room. After a night filled with screaming, Barrett's friends found him dead the following day, his body laid out in the coffin. On the anniversary of Barrett's death, his screams are said to echo around this building. Peter Haining claimed the cries likely belonged to a Mr Pote, who cursed the building after being forced to move away.


 
Drug Induced Ghost

Location: Cambridge - Addenbrookes Hospital

Further Comments: The story is that a ghost appears to those who are being administrated morphine; the psychological effects of the drug would appear to be ignored in this tale...


 
Heavy Stamping Footsteps

Location: Cambridge - Emmanuel College
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Rumoured to have been a suicide victim, the stamping footsteps of the deceased plagued several families that lived there over a period of years. The original building no longer stands, and the replacement has yet to yield any phantom footsteps.


 
Large Furry Penguin-Like Creature

Location: Cambridge - Newmarket Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once seen in Merton Hall, this strange creature has been more recently reported waddling along the Newmarket Road. A local paranormal group examining the case came to the plausible conclusion that the ghost may be that of a doctor in a cloak, wearing a beak-like mask which they believed would protect them from the plague.


 
Monkey

Location: Cambridge - Gog Magog Hills

Further Comments: A phantom monkey which haunted this region was reported in the dim and distant past.


 
White Lady

Location: Cambridge - Sherratt & Hughes, Trinity Street (closed in 1991)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once said to be the oldest bookshop in the UK, the building claims to have a white lady who walks silently down the aisles. Her history is unknown. There are also reports of a man in Victorian evening dress.


 
Animated Stone Lions Drink from the Gutter

Location: Cambridge - Fitzwilliam Museum
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Midnight (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: On the stroke of midnight, the lions that stand outside the Fitzwilliam Museum leave their posts to drink from the gutters a few meters away. Other sources say they disappear inside the building they guard.


 
Pink Light

Location: Cambridge - Guest house in the area
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: A guest here reported their room was filled with an intense pink light after they switched off the bedside lamp. When the lamp was turned on again, the pink light vanished.


 
Frail Young Woman in a Hammock

Location: Cambridge - 25 Montague Road
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 1924
Further Comments: A witness saw a young lady in the summer house lying on a hammock. Some time later he was told the description matched that of his aunt, who had died of tuberculosis a few months before his visit.


 
Unlucky Shuck

Location: Cambridge - Arbury Road
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This road, and area, are said to be frequented by a shuck that brings ill luck to all that see it.


 
Man in Top Hat

Location: Cambridge - New Court, Trinity
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1922
Further Comments: Author T C Lethbridge reported seeing a ghost during his time at university. He mistook the figure as a porter, though upon reflection realised that the man was wearing a top hat (which porters only did on a Sunday, and it was not Sunday!). Lethbridge's friend, who was in the same room during the sighting, failed to perceive the figure.


 
Face with Pointy Beard

Location: Carlton - Village Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth Century
Further Comments: This ghost of a previous rector murdered by his butler was exorcised in the 1870s, and the spirit trapped in a bottle and locked in a cupboard. An accident in the 1920's smashed the glass container, and the ghost returned, peering though windows and banging at night.


 
Hitch-Hiker

Location: Caxton - Road from Caxton Gibbet to Graveley
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is rumoured that a phantom hitch-hiker thumbs his way between Caxton Gibbet and Graveley, but no witnesses appear to exist.


 
Murderer

Location: Caxton - Caxton Gibbet Inn, Room 5 (no longer standing)
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Footsteps pacing around in the upper part of the building have been allocated to a former landlord (or his son) who killed several of the guests. Several other phantoms were also said to haunt the ill, although it has been gutted by fire and may not be rebuilt. The gibbet outside the ruins was made from timbers from a cottage demolition in the village of Caxton in the early 1900s, although is was not the one from which the murderer hanged.


 
Black Chrysler Hit by Express

Location: Conington - Railway junction (8m NE Peterborough)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 16 October, 4pm (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: 1948 saw the tragic death of Colonel Mellows, when he drove his car over the tracks only to be hit by a speeding train. Another explanation of the ghosts here says that a lorry of German POWs was hit during World War Two, and that one of these soldiers now haunts the area.


 
Moving Away

Location: Cottenham - Church
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Church still present
Further Comments: The church was due to be built in the middle of the village, but the Devil thought otherwise and moved the building materials to the outskirts.


 
Heavy Breathing

Location: Croxton - The Spread Eagle public house
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Heavy footsteps were said to haunt an upstairs passageway in this pub, and the sounds of a loud crowd of people were heard coming from an empty room.


 
B17 Crew

Location: Duxford - Imperial War Museum
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The control tower is haunted by crew from a B17 which hit the building while attempting a landing. Other witnesses report hearing the sound of aircraft flying low overhead, though nothing can be seen, while hanger 5 is another paranormal hotspot.


 
The Rector's Wife Bell

Location: Elm - Elm Vicarage near Wisbech, now known as The Old Shires
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The wife of the rector was the only person in the village to hear the bell, but it always foretold a death within a couple of days of the tolls.


 
Ignatius

Location: Elm - Elm Vicarage near Wisbech, now known as The Old Shires
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A disgraced monk known as Ignatius the Bell Ringer haunted this building; the phantom was seen dressed in a brown habit and wearing sandals, and could often be heard walking around the vicarage. His ghost departed the area after saving the life of a woman from the attack of another spirit.
